Post NYC Icons and Monuments pics here: (HSD says there are none)
http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/06/no_icons_no_mon.html

New York has no national monuments or icons, according to the Department of Homeland Security form obtained by ABC News. That was a key factor used to determine that New York City should have its anti-terror funds slashed by 40 percent--from $207.5 million in 2005 to $124.4 million in 2006.

One per customer- mine is Grand Central Station:

Could somebody post a photo of the Intrepid Air/Sea museum for me?

Or any of the great jazz clubs....the Blue Note springs readily to mind.

11. Remember the VJ Day Celebration in Times Square...
...there are (at minimum) hundreds of places of historical interest in NYC. Remember that New York was one of the original 13 colonies.

The idea there are no monuments in NYC is patently destroyed by the existance of the Statue of Liberty.

If THAT'S not an American Monument (like the Washington and Lincon Monuments in D.C.) nothing is.

12. when I read that NYC had no icons
worth acknowledging, the very first image that popped 2 mind was the Statue of Liberty.

I had no idea the Statue of Liberty was no longer considered a national icon...must be because it was a gift from France.

18. The Cooper Union (and McSorley's Ale House)
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 11:48 AM by npincus

A unique and historic college that runs on an endowment (free tuition) left by Peter Cooper, in order to provide educational opportunities for poor folk- a piece of NYC (and American history)-- and my alma matta.

And it's around the corner from McSorley's Tavern (tee hee... and hiccup!)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooper_Union

The Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by American industrialist Peter Cooper, who was a prolific inventor and a successful entrepreneur. A self-made millionaire, Cooper had not received formal education and he made it his lifelong mission to provide opportunity for the poor by offering "education that was as free as the air we breathe and the water we drink." The Cooper Union began with adult education in night classes on the subjects of applied sciences and architectural drawing, as well as day classes for women on the subjects of photography, telegraphy, typewriting and shorthand. Discrimination as to race, religion, or sex was expressly prohibited.

<snip>

On February 27, 1860, the school's Great Hall became the site of a historic address by a little-known attorney from Illinois, then an undeclared candidate for the Republican Party's Presidential nomination. Abraham Lincoln's dramatic speech opposed Stephen A. Douglas on the question of federal power to regulate and limit the spread of slavery to the federal territories and new States. Widely reported in the press and reprinted throughout the North in pamphlet form, the speech galvanized support for Lincoln and contributed to his gaining the Party's nomination for the Presidency. Coincidentally, Peter Cooper himself ran for President in 1876.

Since then, the Great Hall has served as a platform for many historic addresses by American Presidents Grant, Cleveland, Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and most recently, Bill Clinton. Clinton spoke on May 12, 1993 about reducing the federal deficit. To this day, the Great Hall continues to serve as an important metropolitan art space, hosting lectures and performances by key figures such as Steve Reich, Salman Rushdie, Richard Stallman and Rudolph Giuliani.

http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/

The undisputed champion of New York City drinking institutions is an ancient taproom called McSorley's Old Ale House, located in New York City's East Village since 1854. Presidents, residents, authors and thieves -- everyone from Abe Lincoln to John Lennon have indulged in a "One and One," the tradition of ordering two mugs of house-brand ale at a time, while obeying the McSorley's golden rule: "Be Good or Be Gone."

A saloon with swinging doors, sawdust floors and a long wooden counter, McSorley's has been characterized as "an old whore who's lived so long she's become respectable." Perhaps the single greatest novelty of McSorley's is that it has served only one beverage in its nearly 150-year history -- Ale! "A rich, wax-color" is how author Joseph Mitchell described the McSorley's brew, as deft-handed waiters deliver as many as twenty sparkling glasses of ale at a time to thirsty patrons.

The authentic 8-ounce glass mugs, served two-at-a-time across McSorley's bar, are sold two-at-a-time to serious beer drinkers. Forget about buying just one.

33. where is it?
I'm guessing Christopher street or thereabouts.

Speaking of Christopher's Street and icons... I used to live over The Ramrod Bar, across from the West Side Highway--- (the Wild West) in my freshman year of college. Oh the sights and sounds.... long ago, predating the AIDS era. Lots of leather, motorcyles, and action- under my window. It was hard to get to sleep. I didn't get much attention, being a gal, but that was OK. It was quite safe. However, years before a homophobic lunatic shot up the place and killed several people- there were bullet holes still in my front door.

I tried to find an image of the bar which is long gone, but couldn't find one.

You're right over the river from NYC, aren't you? You should do it sometime; we overflew all 5 boroughs -- just nipping the edges of the other 4, naturally -- when I went on the longer flight. Going over Yankee Stadium -- though I was on the wrong side of the chopper to get good pics -- and Central Park was pretty cool, too.

Plus, it's a PROVEN target, regardless of whatever "monuments" it does or does not have.

When I was there it was not in a prominent display area - I didn't see it until I turned 2 leave the area...but that was in '86, so I'm certain pieces have been moved since then. I need 2 go 2 their website and see if I can replace the reprint as mine has faded over the years. I love that picture. I can still feel the punch of awe that greeted me when I saw it.
