Modesto Woman Released After Serving 21 Years for Husband's Murder



A Modesto woman who served 21 years behind bars for the murder of her abusive husband was released today.

Cheryl Orange left the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center this morning. She'd served more than two decades for shooting and killing her husband in 1985. Her first trial ended in a hung jury. She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 17 years to life.

Orange, who is now 52, appealed her conviction under a 2001 law that allows battered women to use evidence of abuse in challenging convictions. A jury acquitted her Wednesday afternoon.

She is the first woman in the state released from custody after being retried under the law, attorneys say. She say her plan is help other women who are in the same situation she was.

If the victim kills the abuser beating raping and torturing them I'd say that's a GOOD thing.The state too often seems too sympathetic to sadistic bullies. It bothers me when a victim of domestic abuse is abnandoned by the state and police, like in how restraining orders are never followed up,so stalkers and abusers will disregard them .I think abusers need to have thier past assault records exposed in court if the case is about assault or someone defending themself from abuse.All spousal abuse records need to be part of ANY case that abusers get involved in and if a battered spouse or other person fights back or kills an abuser it is doubly important for the person on trial to be able to show through the pattern of assaults why the victim defended themself.

There is no excuse for the state to go on protecting abusers after their victims suffer and fight back.That Lady should have not been to jail,therapy yes,but jail? hell no.

That battering scum she killed should have been in jail 21 years. Maybe the fucker would be alive,and in jail hurting or killing asshole people who are thugs and bullies like himself..
Things could improve if more people took domestic violence seriously the danger of repeated domestic violence, assault & battery situations as serious problems with our culture.Abusers never stop their sadism all by themselves.Either the cops,the state or the victim of their abuse stops them.I'm glad the thug that hurt her is dead. I wish all habitual domestic abusers,sociopaths, rapists and pedos would just kill themselves they are not worthy of living among human beings..

Was preferable to living another minute with that jerk.

As a domestic violence survivor, I can assure you that the day you look around and realize that all the solutions are bad is one shitty day.
