We all *must* call Fox News. We can take Bill down with concerted action.
Our threads here will do nothing unless we take action outside the box... or outside the DU Forums. Bill O'Reilly latest may be the two-ton tree that breaks the camel's back. As right-wing as Fox News is, it still has to run a business, it still must worry about revenues. If they feel these things are jeopardized, it will cancel the Bill O'Lielly show. Really.

So i am calling on all of us to get on the phone, to write emails, to write real letters. Just let it be a flood that will wash out from the airwaves that bit of insanity we call Bill o'Reilly. We need to tell our coworkers this story. Get the people who are more conservative, but will resent this rewriting of history to send their own comments.

Sample email and then contact info below

To whom it may concern:
It seems like Bill has accused Americans of war crimes, of killing unarmed German soldiers at Malmedy. What happened was quite the opposite.
It seems in Mr. O'Reilly's sick mind he confuses Nazi war criminals with US servicemen.
An apology from Fox News network and the dismissal of Bill O'Reilly is the only viable option for Fox News to keep even a shred of decency and respect from Americans.

Debate is fine. Rewriting history is quite another. It is unacceptable. It will not be tolerated.
This story will not go away. He has stooped too low, too often. And now he dishonors US servicemen who died at the hands of Nazi war criminals.

Sincerely,
Full name, address.

1. But he's the gift that keeps on giving!!!
I figure that Olbermann and Colbert watch him, so I don't have to...

If people complain overmuch TO that network, Faux will take it as an uptick of interest for that slimeball's show. It might be better to write a LTTE of your local paper, expressing dismay at the smearing of "The Greatest Generation" for craven gain. Get the geezers pissed off; they vote in massive numbers.

The clowns at Faux don't care what kind of reaction they get, they just care about the fact that people ARE reacting. If people start voting with their remote, the Big Giant Head will fade from the screen.

14. Right. Paint him as a Bush apologist
Associate him with all Republicans who voted against VA benefits or slimed a vet like Murtha, Cleland, Kerry or Hackett.

And now would be a good time to bring up Shrub's non-service again.

The actor. He was one of the few survivors of Malmedy.

4. What in the world makes you think that faux news even so much as....
... CARES about the truth?

I suggest it would be more efficacious to get the word out via OTHER stations.

7. This is entertainment, not news
Any publicity is good publicity. "I don't care what you write, just spell my name correctly." Faux is lapping this up and loving every minute.

9. Fox news is republican propaganda, they don't give a fuck if what someone
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 03:55 PM by LaPera
on Fox says is true or not...As long as it attacks the democrats and the republicans come out looking good...They don't care if it's a LIE...

Fox does NOT care what you, or any democrats think.(if it bothers you, so much the better for the vindictive republicans at Fox).

They are only there to force feed republican propaganda down the sheep's and non-suspecting viewers throats.

If they were losing money, Fox would still keep doing the same...(look at all the Christian and right-wing radio stations losing money...but won't let liberals buy time, or the stations).

Money is NOT an issue or worry at Fox...They have enough corporate republican sponsors to NEVER have to worry about that.

Not to mention O'Reilly is making money for them...but even if he wasn't...if he's effective in getting the right-wing message & lies across, that's ALL that matters to Fox!!!

Fox is NEVER going to change, especially if they are pissing off democrats! Money has nothing to do what Fox does...it's fascist republican ideology, philosphy & agenda is what they are promoting.

Don't watch and get over it, put your time and money to things that really matter...Like, pounding the media to expose the republican controlled electronic voting machines fraud & the stealing of our votes.

If our votes don't get counted NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!

13. Unlikely to have an impact
I don't want to be a wet blanket but ...

I work at an ad agency and our media people buy their space based almost 100% on ratings and demographics (Household income, age, education etc.) delivered by a program or network.

Sure, they will drop a "buy" if a major character is convicted of a felony, or drops dead, but beyond that kind of thing advertisers want faces in front of the screen above all else.

17. Done and recommended. Here's mine:

So often, O'Reilly has passed himself off as something of an historian and an expert on WWII. Whenever he thought it would suit his purposes, he's made comparisons between WWII and the
war in Iraq. He was corrected the last time he presented his grotesque version of the Malmedy Massacre, -but I suppose he thinks he knows more about it than veterans of WWII and scholars.

Bill O'Reilly must publicly retract both of his original statements blaming US soldiers for the massacre at Malmedy and apologize for his offensive misrepresentations. His assault on the history of
World War II is a disgrace to the all the men and women who have served in our military and a gross insult against the memory of the true victims at Malmedy. These are sacred matters to real patriots.

19. Note The Advertisers
A very good post and a couple thoughts/suggestions from an old mediatype.

There are two different advertisers that should be targetted here. First are the national ones...the E-Trades and Viagra and Fords that advertise on a national level. This is a difficult job as it requires boycotting or taking some action on a national basis and it's questionable if such actions work.

There's a second tier...local advertisers...company in your area that are a lot easier to target and whose influence on local cable operators could force Faux's hand where targeting a national advertiser won't...they'll always find another one to take the airtime. Local advertisers don't like people protesting in front of their stores or getting complaint letters...they're also far more keen on how effective their advertising is. If they hear that the money they're spending is generating negative publicity...meaning they hear from more people complaining than buying, this gets heard and heard loudly.
