An email to Bill O'Reilly and Fox News accusing them of sedition.
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 04:42 PM by keopeli
Subject: Will you invite Charles Durning, a soldier who escaped and survived the Malmedy Massacre, onto your show to teach you about the truth?
--
It is beyond forgiveness or apology for Bill to assert, for the second time, that American war heroes at Malmedy were actually criminals.

It is beyond forgiveness or apology that Fox News would alter the transcript of his slander and delete the gentle and polite email that he broadcast correcting his second egregious error.

It is beyond the pale of belief that Fox News and Bill O’Reilly have such hubris and disdain for America and the US Military that you will discard and fabricate the historical record, slandering men who gave their lives for our liberties which you so willingly trample upon.

While I have been content to simply ignore most of your misleading and propaganda filled broadcasts in the past, I will not stand idly by while you smear the memories of our brave soldiers – some of whom are still alive!

My question to you, Bill, is are you willing to invite the actor Charles Durning on your show to teach you about the Malmedy Massacre? He was there, you know. He escaped and survived. Some of those heroes whom you slander were his friends. Why don’t you have him on and eat some serious humble pie while he tells you what true American heroism is? Maybe you’ll stop spitting on the graves of our dead war heroes by calling them criminals. Maybe you’ll also stop defending the true war criminals that exist in our current American military with your distorted truths and bald lies.

Until Bill and Fox News issue a detailed an unequivocal apology to America and our military and war heroes and their families, listing Bill’s repeated lies about the Malmedy Massacre, admitting you changed the transcript and returning it to its original state, and restoring the email you quoted correcting your egregious error, I and others like me who diligently defend the current soldiers who serve in a war of aggression that I abjectly oppose on moral grounds (and have from the beginning) promise to haunt you and taunt you until you are taken down by the prevailing morality of the American public at large.

If I could spit in an email, I’d land it in your face. Sedition is an ugly, ugly crime, but you, Bill and Fox News, practice it without remorse. Shame on you!

Peace.

3. I hope this episode is the final nail in O'Liely's coffin.
It would give me great pleasure to see him be the first of the bombastic RW blowhards to bite the dust and disappear from the media horizon.
Let him have to spend the rest of his life saying, "But I used to be...."

18. I agree, except, ....
I would like his swan song to be an on-air nervous breakdown, for his own good. Clearly the man needs help, but I fear he won't get it until he hits bottom with a thundering thud.

8. And while you're at it, Brillo, invite Harold Billow
Memorial Day weekend always is a somber time for Mount Joy resident Harold Billow.

Billow, a World War II veteran, survived the Malmedy Massacre, when he said 86 members of the Battery B-285 Field Artillery Observation Battalion were shot by German soldiers, after the Germans captured the battalion.

"Every Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Veterans' Day," Billow said, "I can see that happening just as if it was happening out here. That was a sad, sad day."

9. ...and Eddy Cutler, too
Cutler remembers landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy.

And, months later as Hitler sought to turn the tide of war, Cutler was in Malmedy, Belgium.

During the Battle of the Bulge, German SS soldiers lined and executed American POWs at Malmedy.

Cutler helped bury the body parts in the East Belgium town.

10. foxnews de-moralizes america, they all do (pigmedia)
if 'morality' is an affinity for truth and honesty and quiet, unpublicised integrity then the rightwingers (re: tim russert says 'integity is for paupers) especially the mediawhores like limbah-humbug, brite hum, anus coultergeist, bob scheiffer, woof blitzer, glen beck, don imus, charles gibson, laura ingram, michael isikoff, tukker carlson, fred barnes, michael medved and a host (plague of locusts, more like it) of others all do the same thing by passing off deceit as truth, and making deceit the truth to too many americans: this de-moralizes the people, make them weak and suseptible to political sickness that harms the nation, and curdles the precious patriotic juices etc

14. Durning on WWII:
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 06:56 PM by FLDem5
http://www.pbs.org/memorialdayconcert/wwii/durning.html

<snip>
During the concert, Charles Durning, one of America's premier character actors and a U.S. Army veteran of Normandy, helps bring to life the moving stories of the men who participated in that valiant air and sea campaign. As a 17-year-old infantryman, Durning was among the first wave of men to land on Omaha Beach. During that campaign and later in the war, he was wounded three times and awarded three Purple Hearts and a Silver Star.

<snip>
"There's only so much you can witness," he said of his time overseas. Indeed, his war decorations were hard-earned. Durning was the only man to survive a machine gun ambush on Omaha Beach - and he had to rise above serious wounds and kill seven German gunners to do it.

Months later in Belgium, he was stabbed eight times by a German teenage soldier wielding a bayonet; Durning eventually bludgeoned him to death with a rock. He was released from the hospital in time to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was taken prisoner. After escaping a subsequent massacre of the other prisoners, he was obliged by American forces to return to the scene and help identify bodies. Finally, a bullet in the chest a few months later ended his relentless tour of duty - and began four years of repeated hospitalizations for his physical and psychological injuries.

In an interview with Parade Magazine, Durning said of his initial post-war years, "I dropped into a void for almost a decade. The physical injuries heal first. It's your mind that's hard to heal." And, as he points out, it's not just a matter of what is done to you, but what you find yourself capable of doing. "There are many secrets in us, in the depths of our souls, that we don't want anyone to know about. There's terror and repulsion in us, horrifying things we keep secret. A lot of that is released through acting."

What I'm thinking about Durning is easy to say ...... but not Billo.

16. I haven't seen many who have endured war...
rush to it with as much machismo and glee as those who never served, or served during peacetime. No insult intended, just an observation.

17. It comes from the same place as little boys who go
'doooge doooge' .... I'm not sure that translates to the written form. Its the sound little boys make when they want to mimic a car accelerating .... or the sound of a punch ..... or the sound of a machine gun.

Big little boys become enamored with the notion of war and machismo. Il Dunce cum codpiece and flight suit kinda says it all. Or Tweety fawning over tht image ... and every general or former military guy who comes on his show.

My Dad served in WWII. He never spoke about it. He also never wanted to take us camping. Durning saw far worse. I understand the reticence.

I also understand Billo's bluster ... and I am sickened by it.
