Protect marriage - Outlaw divorce
Gays are a minute percentage of our population. What is needed to protect marriage is outlawing divorce. Divorce is the real enemy of marriage.

Insist they back an amendment to ban divorce. Let's save marriage.

3. So contact them
I think we all should. Gays don't threaten families, divorces do.

I like that slogan.

8. I have.
I've ignored the "gay" part, just telling them "look at this instead".

I won't become a broken record on the issue, but letting them know - again - what makes more logical sense - might be appreciated.

For marriage needs to be taken seriously, not frivolously. Banning divorce for all but extreme cases would certainly get people to think twice about it.

11. Divorce should never be allowed
If the right wingers won't allow abortions for violent rape of female minors, to preserve the family, why would they allow divorce?

13. Abortion wouldn't be allowed in even extreme cases in S.D.
to preserve family, but you'd accept divorce?

4. Are you serious?
Edited on Sat Jun-03-06 12:56 AM by TomInTib
Really.

Do you not think that two people, though they were once loving partners, might not grow apart over a quarter century?

And, if they did, should they be expected to live the balance of their lives in a sham and a breech of vows ("to love and....")?

7. Welcome to the pre 1950's where every man had a wife at home and a
mistress else where. Divorce, gay marriage or nothing else is the threat to marriage, married people are the problem.

5. Patience, they'll get to it.
While they probably won't outlaw divorce altogether,
they will try to turn the clock back to when divorce
was hard to get and cajole more couples into "convenant
marriages."

The religious right has a lot on it's plate with SSM,
contraception, decency in the media. Give them time.

10. You mean like Rudy and Newt?
But the right wing needs to acknowledge divorce is the real enemy of families.

Now, why did they choose to aim at gays?

That "family values" list includes, among others;
* Ronald Reagan - divorced the mother of two of his children to marry Nancy Reagan who bore him a daughter only 7 months after the marriage.
* Bob Dole - divorced the mother of his child, who had nursed him through the long recovery from his war wounds.
* Newt Gingrich - divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.
* Dick Armey - House Majority Leader - divorced
* Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas - divorced
* Gov. John Engler of Michigan - divorced
* Gov. Pete Wilson of California - divorced
* George Will - divorced
* Sen. Lauch Faircloth - divorced
* Rush Limbaugh - Rush and his current wife Marta have six marriages and four divorces between them.
* Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia - Barr, not yet 50 years old, has been married three times. Barr had the audacity to author and push the "Defense of Marriage Act." The current joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill is "Bob Barr, WHICH marriage are you defending?"
* Sen. Alfonse D'Amato of New York - divorced
* Sen. John Warner of Virginia - divorced (once married to Liz Taylor)
* Gov. George Allen of Virginia - divorced
* Henry Kissinger - divorced
* Rep. Helen Chenoweth of Idaho - divorced
* Sen. John McCain of Arizona - divorced
* Rep. John Kasich of Ohio - divorced
* Rep. Susan Molinari of New York (2000 Republican National Convention Keynote Speaker) - divorced

and don't forget Neil Bush..Dimson's brother...

14. All Republicans should be required to return to their first spouse
unless, of course, the first spouse was married to someone else first. But Senator Orrin (rhymes with "foreign") Hatch will have to decide which one of their wives each of his Old Mormon Republican constituents gets to keep. Reminds me of the reputed comment of the Comanche chief Quanah Parker when urged by Christian missionaries to jettison all but one of his wives as the price of becoming "americanized." "Uhmmn, you tell 'em." Probably there should be some kind of punishment for "homewreckers" too. Look out, Monica and Kindasleazy. At least one of them shouldn't have been appointed SoS. It's late and my mind is racing with all this "core values" talk. This country is going off its collective rocker. Except, of course, for that guardian of all things "proper," David Broder.

18. Divorce used to be outlawed for many
women couldn't divorce unless they could prove the man was really really really bad, and then usually had to have him say ok also. I don't think jokes about outlawing divorce are funny, though I get your point. How about outlawing marriage, or at least figuring out the different types (social, legal, religious, combination)

20. After almost thirty years in a happy marriage, I say
you're full of it.

The people I know who have divorced were better off for it, and so were their kids.

If you really cared about helping to preserve marriages, which I doubt, you'd advocate raising the age at first marriage, helping to prevent pregnancy outside of marriage, and increasing education -- all measures that if taken together would sharply lower the divorce rate.

But this is just a ploy to further your personal agenda.
