I think the world of Nader and I respect the DLC
There are some people that Russ Feingold and John Kerry can't get to. Some folks need a Joementum like candidate, some need a revolution.

I have always been a firm supporter of allowing and encouraging people to advocate their passions.

The idea of bashing Nader or the DLC is fine here at DU, but in the world, the world of political advocacy, in our local political climate, we need to allow these people to express themselves. Frankly, it is a waste of time trying to get a pure Green (a Green party activist that feels that the Dem party needs to be destroyed in order have true opposition to corporate fascism) to support Hillary Clinton or John Kerry. I always encourage them to advocate their beliefs, and join them on common causes (like opposing the war, which doesn't seem like a Dem party issue, but it is one of this Democratic party members main passions).

Nasty infighting seems to lead to on-line apologies, and real world rifts. A better route is to encourage dissent, and advocate your passion.

Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to your level, and beat you with experience.

2. I must admit
I don't often "take it to the streets". I think that a celebrity (like Mario Cuomo) could post the same thread and blow many people's minds.

It is much funner to rouse the rebels then it is to build consensus.

Any jackass can knock down a barn. It takes a great man to build on. - Mario Cuomo.

8. Here's another.
I concur with this:

Nasty infighting seems to lead to on-line apologies, and real world rifts. A better route is to encourage dissent, and advocate your passion.

Frankly, any group that leaves out the nastiness, and sticks to advocacy, is going to attract more of my presence and support.

4. You can praise Nader all you want, but he didn't take
votes from only "greens". I know a lot of people who voted for him in 2000, and they aren't green and probably never will be. They voted for him because he said "there is no difference between Democrats or Republicans", and he was so respected for what he HAD done in his previous "life" they believed him and in him and voted for him. They are pissed now.

In 2000, we only got Nader's words, Bushes sound bytes and Gore's wooden speeches from the media. Given all that was against him, Gore did pretty well. (Well, he won, but that's some thing else.)

A dem who constantly says, bring on all the naysayers, is just inviting a split in the party. The press loves this kind of thing, and since they only seem to highlight the bad things that happen in the dem party, we can expect to always be the minority. But then, that's what Naderites want. I've started to believe they are a stealth wing of the repub party. And you certainly proved the point, by bringing up the one man who ALWAYS starts an argument.

5. Gore did better in the race with Nader then he did without him
according to Al From.

More Dems voted for Bush then Nader. Your time would be better served advocating for the Dems, and not against the Greens.

I'm not talkin about here on DU, where we all are against the GOP, and you can bash Nader or the DLC all you want. I'm talkin about when you are doing local political work, in real life. When out campaigning, I don't argue with the Greens, I support their advocacy of their issues. I also try to find common ground with republicans.

There are lots of republicans that oppose the death penalty and the drug war. Some even oppose the war in Iraq.

My point is that you should advocate what you love, and allow others to do the same. Advocacy will get you much better results.

6. Let me put it another way
you would be better off working for Spitzer and local dems then bashing Mackley McCourt or trying to convince the greens to vote for Spitzer. Spitzer will win with McCourt in the race. The local dems might win if you get out the vote. Bashing McCourt and the greens is a waste of time.

7. I agree and I'll say it again:
I voted for Nader in 2000, I was active in his campaign, and I make NO APOLOGIES.

Ralph was right.

Having said that - I was, and am again, in Texas. So my voting for Nader did NOT elect Smirky McDeath. If I'd been in Florida, I would've been just as active for Gore. And I will be this time, in 2008.
