this morning? It was about this group
http://www.unit08.com founded by these people
http://www.unity08.com/founderscouncil in an attempt find a solution to the stalemate that is represented by the DC version of the two major parties by having a grassroots movement to select candidates for a combined ticket from both parties and/or an independent candidate. These are their stated goals:
"Goal One is the election of a Unity Ticket for President and Vice-President of the United States in 2008 – headed by a woman and/or man from each major party or by an independent who presents a Unity Team from both parties.
Goal Two is for the people themselves to pick that Unity Ticket in the first half of 2008 – via a virtual and secure online convention in which all American voters will be qualified to vote.
Goal Three, our minimum goal, is to effect major change and reform in the 2008 national elections by influencing the major parties to adopt the core features of our national agenda. With a group of voters who comprise at least 20% of the national electorate, we feel confident that our voters will decide the 2008 election."
I am interested a bit in this. I don't see the Rs as formally entrenched in the system as able to address the nation's problems. But I've become equally despondent with the entrenched nature of the Dem leadership. Just because you hung around and sucked up the air in the rooms for years doesn't mean your ideas are good or are good alternatives to the stinking mess we have now. The trench has become a cesspool. If this makes me a disloyal Dem, so be it. I'm sick of the sameoldsameold. I think the nation is too firmly held prisoner by these sets of polarized ideas now, but the mushy middle ground they seek is no answer either. The nation needs fresh ideas and new ways of looking at human issues and the issues of governance and accountability. Everyone needs to sacrifice a little and give a little ground. That doesn't have to mean compromising integrity in the process.
I'm going to bookmaark this site and keep it for a while. Don't know if I'll follow up further on it. But I'm open to it.
Would be interested in comment on the viability of this idea.
