Talking to those one-issue (anti-abortion) voters
I'm going to be campaigning in a district where there are, according to surveys that have been done, lots of people who vote Republican because they are against abortion.

I think that it is better not to argue about abortion, but to emphasize what it really means to care about children when you vote.

It means caring whether or not we leave them a mind boggling deficit and a depressed economy that will leave them with less opportunity and more debt.

It means caring whether or not we leave them with an environment that is so contaminated that there will be many more pollution related cancers and illnesses which will kill them or destroy their quality of life.

It means caring whether or not our foreign policy turns a blind eye to the suffering of children around the world, especially those children in countries where we instigate war.

We do support children, and we support a culture of life that extends to all of human life, not just the time spent in the womb.

1. That is the only way to frame the issue, I think
I have a friend who is so ardently anti-abortion that she literally voted against her own self-interest. She's on disability, and because of her repuke vote, her benefits were cut, literally making it more difficult to live. I don't blame her for her position-she herself was adopted by two ardent Catholics who walked their talk when it came to being against abortion.

We haven't talked since phones were disconnected, but if I were to talk with her about it today, I think I would take your tactic. You may wish to check, but I think under repukes funds for foster care and for helping with adoptions has been cut-might want to ask any right to lifer what they think about that. And if they DO get wound up about abortion, remind them that it is about choice, and that under Clinton the number of abortions went down.

6. I tend to want to tell someone
like your friend that they DESERVE what's happened. Which is incredibly vicious of my, I know, but I get so friggin' tired of people like her (whether or not on disability) who think they have the high moral ground, but in reality have no clue what they are really supporting.

It is so much more than simple abortion, pro or con, that the right wingers try to present this issue as. It's ultimately about how much we care for each other, and to what extent we help each other out. Frankly, the religious right in the end seems not to care about the helpless. It's invariably been the forces of Liberalism that have made the world a better place to live in.

2. If a govenment can outlaw abortion
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 11:50 AM by Mz Pip
then what's to stop it, at some future date, from mandating abortions? Forced abortion is the law of the land in China, the country the Repugs love to do business with.

4. Anti abortion voters tend not to give a hoot about womens rights
but they may actually care about children.

5. If you actually care about the unborn
you owe it to them to do what you can to save the ones you can.
OKAY now wrap your head around this. Abortions went down every year of the Clinton Administration, However they have increased every year of the Bush Administration.
This would lead you to believe, though Dems aren't anti choice their policies make abortion less likely. Now why would a pro life voter vote for the party who's policies increase the likelyhood of increased loss of life? Could it be the Republicans do a better job of hiding the facts than the do at preventing abortion.
A Republicans worst enemy is an educated voter.
