Who is more likely to beat Schwarzenegger, Angelides or Westly?
I am looking into this for some barely politically active family members in California. I am not interested in who you think sucks or who is DLC or any other general ugliness. I'd like to know what the polls say or other data or facts that indicate who is more likely to defeat Schwarzenegger in the fall.

Please, no mud.

1. The polls say Westly would do better against Arnie
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 08:59 AM by skipos
but give me a minute to look a few up.

From May 26th LA Times poll...
"Westly v. Schwarzenegger : If the November election was held today, Westly would capture 50% of the
vote, while Schwarzenegger would receive 40%. In April Westly led by 48% to 39%."

"Angelides v. Schwarzenegger: Angelides and Schwarzenegger are virtually tied (46% for Angelides v.
45% for Schwarzenegger) if the November election were held today. They also were tied in April (43%
each)."

From a recent SF Gate poll...
"The poll also showed the governor ahead of Westly, 44 percent to 42 percent, in a head-to-head race and topping Angelides in a general election matchup by 46 percent to 39 percent."
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2006/06/02/MNGK5J6BAN1.DTL&type=politics

Most recent poll from Rasmussen...
Phil Angelides (D) 45%
Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) 45%

Steve Westly (D) 46%
Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) 44%

Sometimes they both beat Arnie, sometimes they both lose to Arnie, but in EVERY poll that I have seen, Westly does better than Angelides against Arnie. Sometimes a little better, sometimes a lot better.

2. Thanks, that's what I was looking for.
Are there other polling websites I could check out?

8. I like these

http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x11358.xml
http://www.cqpolitics.com/
http://www.swingstateproject.com/
http://electionpredictions.blogspot.com/

though I don't think they have any new info on CA. There are plenty of Angelides supporters on DU. If there was a single poll with Angelides doing better than Westly against Arnie, I would think someone would have posted it.

9. Thanks!
I didn't realize that asking for "no mud" would mean so few posts! Thanks for your help.

10. Westly's website has polls, I couldn't find any on Angelides site.
Which should make it clear that the polls are not as flattering to Angelides.

I voted Clark in 2004 by the way. I still think he would have pulled more votes than Kerry did.

11. I couldn't fine polls on Angelides site either.
I passed along my advice to the family. They want Schwarzy out of there, and it seems like Westly will have a better chance of doing that.

Obviously I liked Clark in 04 and still support him for 08 if he chooses to run. It is amazing the number of Clark supporters that are here. I hope he can continue to build it.

3. In a fair vote count, both Angelides and Westly would blow Schwarz
away in the fall, no matter what the opinion polls say now. The problem is not how to choose between these two "business as usual" Democrats*, but how to get a fair vote count with Bushite corporations counting all the votes, using "TRADE SECRET," PROPRIETARY programming code, and with a Schwarz appointee as Sec of State shilling for Diebold.

I therefore believe that the Sec of State race is arguably the far most important race in the primary and in the general. In the primary, we have a clear choice between a candidate who is very knowledgeable and savvy on electronic voting and a strong advocate of open government, DEBRA BOWEN, and one who is clueless on electronic voting, Deborah Ortiz.

If you would like our votes to be counted in public view--if you want TRANSPARENT elections--vote for DEBRA BOWEN, and contribute now to an effort to place Bowen ads on Spanish language stations today and tomorrow. See below. Although Bowen got the endorsement of 80% of the rank and file Democrats at the state convention, it's a very tight race, with a lot of voters ignorant of the stark difference between these two candidates on the matter of TRANSPARENT elections.

-----

"Latinos for America has produced (pro-bono) Spanish language radio ads for the Los Angeles market that will run in Spanish talk radio on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

"We need your help to get the ads placed. Whatever you can give will help: Follow the link to 'Valley Grassroots for Democracy'

and make a donation ending in $.06 (for example $50.06 or $500.06 -- whatever you want to give). The $.06 will let Valley Grassroots for Democracy know that your contribution is to go to the Bowen ads in Spanish. Discussion at this thread...

*I recommend a vote for Michael Strimling for Governor in the Primary. Send a message to our two, "business as usual" frontrunners, Angelides and Westly. Check out Strimling's web site and weep for a true Left platform! www.michaelstrimling.com. (Ex.: Angelides and Westly both support capital punishment. Strimling opposes it. Need I say more?) It's very difficult to judge how Angelides and Westly WILL BE JUDGED by voters in the fall, because neither is very well known NOW, and voters are just now learning about them. For instance, Westly has much better developed and stronger positions on the environment--likely to appeal to Calif voters--than does Angelides. But I doubt that opinion poll subjects know that NOW. On the negative side for Westly, voters are just finding out his penchant for attack ads. Opinion polls on Westly vs. Schwarz would not likely reflect this negative yet. I think either one would beat the pants off Schwarz in a fair vote, as I said above. So why not strike a bell for true progress, peace and justice, and vote for Strimling? (He would make a GREAT governor!)

4. As a repentant Nader voter, I'm done with "sending a message" with my vote
I totally appreciate your response, but if Schwarz is re-elected that will send a much stronger message than any vote for someone who is 100% guaranteed not to win. I find Angelides and Westly to be pretty good and, like many other people, I don't see one as being way better than the other. Schwarz is on the rebound right now, and I want him out.

I know many people here like supporting candidates that have no chance of winning, even if it means a Republican win in the end. After suffering through years of Bush and republican rule, I am not doing that anymore.

6. Remember what happened last time the election was based on "electability"
Remember how that was the "meme" how Kerry was somehow more electable than Dean? The fact is that the polls can't predict who is the best candidate to beat S., because that campaign hasn't been mounted yet.
But I can tell you one thing, Angelides decided to run against S. back when no other Democrat would run because they all thought he was unbeatable. Angelides didn't hesitate to fight S. to protect labor and the peoples' common interests as Treasurer.

7. Most of DU would disagree with your assessment that Kerry legitimatelylost
but that is another discussion. Before Iowa, there were never a bunch of polls showing Kerry doing better against Bush than all the other candidates. However, about every poll shows Westly doing better than Angelides against the Gropinator. Some polls show both democratic candidates losing, some polls have both candidates winning, but Westly is always doing better. As I have said before, if you don't believe in polls that's fine, they can definitely be inaccurate many times. I just hope you aren't one of those people who only believe in polls when you like the results.

In the past I have supported democratic candidates who, like Angelides, look like they wouldn't do as well as other democratic candidates in the general election. There is nothing wrong with that, but you should be able to admit that virtually all polls show that Angelides is going to have a harder time in November.
