Despite scoops, "Editor & Publisher" gets little recognition
Market Watch: JON FRIEDMAN'S MEDIA WEB
Editor and Publisher has a media problem
Commentary: Despite Strupp's scoops, it gets little recognition
By Jon Friedman, MarketWatch

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - It seems that Editor & Publisher has a problem with the media.
It's nothing less than deliciously ironic when a publication which has been reporting on the press for more than a century is displeased about the way that IT, in turn, is being covered. Specifically, E&P's editors are disappointed that their magazine isn't getting more attention.

E&P Editor Greg Mitchell nodded knowingly when I said I was surprised by the dearth of publicity. "Sadly, that is true," he said. "Publicists have said that the press only covers consumer magazines, not trades. But I don't know if that's true."

In any event, the media are overlooking a worthwhile story. E&P breaks more media-beat news than practically any outfit - thanks largely to the efforts of the Human Scoop Machine, Joe Strupp. Such veterans as David Astor provide a healthy diet of interesting stories as well. While it could be argued that E&P's scoops get picked up on media-oriented Web sites and blogs all the time, when was the last time you remember reading a story ABOUT the magazine?

"It's odd," Mitchell added. "They don't call to see what we're doing (even though) they say, 'We see you everywhere.'"

Mitchell shrugged. "'I see you everywhere,'" he parroted. "I don't know what that means."...

1. I think they need a sexier title. Editor and Publisher just sounds dull.
Something catchy like "U.S. News and World Report." Now there's a slinky little magazine title. Draws you right in. Or, say, "The Economist." A bold and brassy name for a bold and brassy magazine.

My expertise in this field may be suspect, however.

2. To be fair...
How many people do you see walking the streets perusing Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets or Journal of the History of Ideas? Both are kick-ass in their own way, but a lot of average Joes may consider the reading on both too dry, if not completely over their heads.

Maybe the case is the same with E&P. They've been around forever, and they're quite respectable, but I never see them on bookstore shelves.

3. I gotta agree...
As it says in the article, E&P is a trade publication. I read it myself, but I'm in the business. I really doubt I would if I didnn't work for a newspaper.

4. Same here.
Our newspaper is a subscriber and I don't miss an issue. But I agree with what they're saying. If I wasn't in the newspaper business I probably wouldn't even know about E&P.

5. They're one of my "must read" sites
right up there with DU and the Daily Howler.

They don't get recognition because their truth is uncomfortable to power.

7. I posted that news story. E&P was purchased by a consortium...
that includes the Carlyle Group. I pray it doesn't change.
