AMERICAN BAR ASSOC. INVESTIGATES BUSH FOR SIGNING STATEMENTS
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 12:51 PM by Jeffersons Ghost
According to an interview on AIR-AMERICA all presidents combined added only around 300 signing statements, while Bush has over 700! Bush used signing statements on issues like torture, eavesdropping on countless Americans and circumventing due process of law with Cuban detainees.

Essentially, a "signing statement" allows a president to let a bill pass with a disclaimer. (ie) When legislators passed a bill condemning torture, the president simply added the statement "unless the president deems it necessary" and signed the bill that meant to hold the US to the Geneva Convention.

I guess those nasty trial lawyers are going to try and fry the liar. They love getting obvious liars under oath.

do I hear my favorite song cuing up?

Bar group will review Bush's legal challenges

By Charlie Savage, Globe Staff June 4, 2006

WASHINGTON -- The board of governors of the American Bar Association voted unanimously yesterday to investigate whether President Bush has exceeded his constitutional authority in reserving the right to ignore more than 750 laws that have been enacted since he took office.

Meeting in New Orleans, the board of governors for the world's largest association of legal professionals approved the creation of an all-star legal panel with a number of members from both political parties.

They include a former federal appeals court chief judge, a former FBI director, and several prominent scholars -- to evaluate Bush's assertions that he has the power to ignore laws that conflict with his interpretation of the Constitution.

Bush has appended statements to new laws when he signs them, noting which provisions he believes interfere with his powers.

I am so disgusted with the direction the country has taken. (as all of us here are)

It would be nice to not wake up angry every day.

are the t-shirts union-made in the USA, which might cost a bit more but imagine the marketing advantage!

25. I'm certainly no professional at it, but I can see what I can work
up for you if you have some ideas. I wouldn't use anything BUT American made shirts, although I can't promise if they would be Union made or not. However, coming from a strong Union family, it certainly is an option.

Let me know what kind of graphic you would like and I'll see what I can do.

Once they cross the boarder, they should just issue themselves a signing statement absolving them of crossing the boarder illegally.

whitewash. If they really give a shit, they would just denounce his actions.

I remember the day because I dumbly wrote on DU "why don't they disbar him instead of "condemning." You can't disbar him because he couldn't gain admission into ANY law school. too lazy and stupid.

19. I love this quote:
"If this president were a Democrat and had such a record, you can bet your life Republicans and conservatives would be in the forefront of resisting this executive over-reach."

From Sully of all people

I still disagree with him about many things but Sullivan is ripping on this admin and the religious right as well if not better than anyone right now.

20. Just to make something clear about this.
I'm not a lawyer but I'm 99.99% sure that the ABA doesn't have any jurisdiction or enforcement ability here. This is a good thing because it brings attention to it and there will be an existing ABA opinion on this if it ever goes to the SCOTUS, but this review in itself has no official power.
