FYI, Adam and Eve were never married. So using the "Adam and Steve"
straw man argument is pointless.

just felt like pointing that out.

Additionally, King David had Bathsheba's husband killed so he could have her.
Solomon had multiple wives and concubines
Abraham pretended his wife was his sister
And the ancient tradition of widowhood was for the surviving brother to marry his sister in law who was widowed, regardless of whether he was already married or not.

I think fundies should spend more time reading the bible and less time preaching from the books of Prejudice, Bigotry, and Acts of Morans I and II.

:)

1. They love the Old Testament more than the New.
It's bloodier and men get to fool around.

26. Kinda funny when you stop and think about it.
Since the New Testament includes the time during which Jesus was alive and the Old Testament is 500 years plus prior to Jesus lifetime.

"Christians"......the need a new word for what they are as opposed to what they believe.

2. Ah, those silly OT Jews
Completely Corrupt. No wonder God kicked their asses all the time.

Modern day christians would be better served to read the NT and how christians were chastisted by Paul and others, not to mention Revelation bringing a smack down on corrupt churches, and the whole sheep/goats thing Jesus talked about.

4. erm...that's not what I'm saying, btw.
I'm making the point that their arguments are bogus, not that old testament Jews were corrupt.

Sorry if you took it that way.

5. I didn't take it that way, I meant it that way
They were corrupt. It's no wonder God kept sending prophet after prophet to them telling em how messed up they were.

30. A great deal of the supposed messed-uppedness occurred
when the Jews were on the upswing. There's no correlation. The corruption was actually following false gods.

31. Which is why it is not a fun read. The OT however is FUN!
It has thrills and chills and rape and guilt and lust and slinky foreign women and more lust and begats lots of begats and even, here and there, a bit of wry humor.

And war. The OT has WAR. And HEROES. And dirty tricks.

It's just fun.

3. Abraham also
impregnated his wife's handmaid (to whom he was NOT married)....

Has anyone ever satisfactorily given an answer to: "Who had the girl that Cain married?" When did GOD *poof* those people into existence?

12. On the answer:
I have heard it argued before (at a bible study many eons ago) that the world in general evolved, but god created the jews. So cain shacked up with some evolved human. Nuts I know.

Other theories - sudo gap theory, god was doing a lot more elsewhere but the only ones who recorded it were the jews. Hence a lot of similar creationism stories (god was multitasking) but the best written account was the OT one.

An extension of that theory - god created each race at varying places in the world and out of all them simply chose the M.E. one to interact with on the salvation side of issues (ie, the race from which Jesus would arise). God did interact with other groups, like the American Indians, in different ways - so much so the OT actually mentions that even the heathens showed god more respect that the jews many times.

This would lend one to see all the myths and traditions/faiths/et al as having a common basis and in some cases being not much different with one exception (Jesus). There are christian groups that believe that while Jesus did die for us all, we all did not need to know that fact to have salvation - it was universal. As Jesus noted, many will say to him they worked for him but he will see through it and say 'I never knew you' - but the reverse is also true because many who never knew Jesus would carry out his ideals and plans (Love, et al). He paid the price, if we choose to reject it and live in evil, then we lose out. The core ideal to some is not as much to tell them they have to worship him, but to tell them his message and the good news that death is not the end.

7. Why do you hate Christians?
Don't you know they have been given the devine rightousness and secret handshake from james dobson for a mere 50 bucks a month to pick and choose in the bible the passages which sate their hate and to ignore anything in the good book which might be inconvenient to their lifestyles? On your knees heathen!

8. They are selective with their bible history.
They pick and choose parts of the bible that suit their own twisted logic and ignore the rest of it. If there ever was an "anti-church", these so-called "Christians" are it. They are a diseased, destructive cult that is the opposite of what Jesus intended.

As soon as they say "God," their argument is invalid. Last I checked, there were no deities in any branch of our government, now or ever.

10. I like hitting them with this...
'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' Matthew 25:40

So, when you hate gays, you hate Jesus! When you bomb people, you bomb Jesus. When you lie to people, you lie to Jesus. When you cheat on your wife, you cheat on Jesus. And so on...

I also like "Judge not, lest you be judged yourself. And the measure that you use shall also be put to you." Matthew 7:1-2

15. Wise words from Jesus
Very damning to the hypocrites of the day, as it is today as well.

The one on judging is a favorite of mine. We all judge, it is our nature - Jesus warned us that someday we would be judged as well, and the very same judgements we used would be at our trial.

Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 02:40 PM by MindPilot
You couldn't be more wrong.

Why just last year I attended a wedding wherein the minister talked about the first wedding--preformed by GOD Himself--on the occasion of Adam and Eve's nuptials. Adam had just turned 21 and Eve was 18. Yes, the preacher actually knew their ages.

On Edit: The preacher also pointed out that both had remained pure and virginal throughout their childhoods. He elaborated by explaining that Adam had never touched himself or had an impure thought looking at Eve.

(I guess if you grow up with a hot chick wearing nothing but a fig leaf around all the time, you just don't care anymore.)

(and I am a christian myself btw)

It was the serpent. He figured if he lured them into marrying that it would be a fate worse than death for poor old adam. No more watching football on Sunday. Nagging all the time, etc and so on. Paradise wasn't lost because of the apple, it was the ring :) (one ring to screw them all!).

19. It's perfectly consistent....
They don't care about marriage PER SE - that's just the marketing of it all.

What they care about is men controlling women and their sexuality.

All of those biblical examples are SOLID on men controlling women and their sexuality, hence they're all ok by republican lights.

28. Yep, especially evident in the preacher's mention of Adam & Eve's ages
I'll bet he would've said 40 and 12 if he thought for a moment it wouldn't have elicited gasps from the congregation.

But hey, that was the Old Testament. Everyone know that the all knowing God changed his mind and those rules no longer apply... unless we want them to.
