2. Arlen Specter:
Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, said that while he believed marriage should be between a man and a woman, he said he would vote against the amendment to ban gay marriage because the matter was already being addressed by the states. He quoted the late Sen. Barry Goldwater as saying that government "ought to be kept off our backs, out of our pocketbooks and out of our bedrooms."

"This is a matter which ought to be left to the states, and the states are taking care of it," he said. "It's a matter of privacy, it's a matter of tolerance, two very, very highly placed values in our society."

3. Lincoln Chafee, for one.
Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe voted against it the last time around.

I'd mention John McCain, who said he's opposing it...but you asked about a Republican of decency. Sorry.

4. we won't know until the vote
I don't expect any repugs to get up and talk against it. I wish just one of the sane ones would, maybe there aren't any left.

5. How about a list of the Dems speaking out against it?
And I don't mean dismissing it solely as a diversionary tactic, but standing up for full rights for gay citizens? Where are the voices within my own party? What Senators can we count on besides Kennedy and Feingold? Where is the rebuttal to Bush's hatefest today?
