We hold these truths to be self-evident...
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 04:30 PM by MercutioATC
...that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Heard that before?

Does it say all "white" men?

Does it say all "Christian" men?

Does it say all "able-bodied" men?

Does it say all "straight" men??

No. It says "ALL men".

For those who whine about gays wanting "special rights", it might do well to remind them of this. Our Declaration of Independence...the document that declared to the world what we stood for...said that ALL men are created equal. It's only because of the abysmal stupidity of the American populace that we've had to add legislation that says "Oh, that means blacks, too...Oh, that means Jews, too...Oh, that means women and the handicapped and, well, ALL men, too".

...and yes, that means gays, too.

That's not an "opinion". That's not a "liberal view". That's the basic intent of the Declaration of Independence...to announce to the world that we were creating a place where ALL people were equal.

All means all.

Period.

6. Nah - was referring to your "all means all" view....
... Framing it so that anyone who believes "all" DOESN'T mean all is to be regarded as anti-American. Which seems about right to me.

7. Hard to see how so many people miss that.
They'll prate on about how great this country is while denying the single most important reason for that greatness... equality .

8. Use this line of reasoning with every homophobe you see.
I have yet to see one that can attempt anything resembling a response.

9. Yes!
My right winger co-workers prefer the bible over the Declaration of Independence. That is scary.

Can you ask them how soon? And can't they move further away?

14. You beat me to the punch. I have been thinking about this all
day. It burns my ass that these rethuglicans talk about what "patriots" they are and then have the nerve to take a huge dump on the Declaration of Independence.

So all of you gays out there...keep paying your taxes because our country needs the money. If you want to be treated equally, well...fuck you.

16. You are preaching to the choir, of course
The problem with the other side is that when that line was written, back in 1776, "all men" didn't mean what it does now, considering that black men (among others) were not really "men" at the time. Rather than trying to expand that concept so that it does, indeed include "all men," fundies strive to "define" the concept based on their own distorted and tribal value systems and beliefs.

Denial is the right wing stock in trade. Their biggest argument (unspoken, of course) is that gay men are not really "men." That is at the heart of their homophobia, that if they show any support, or even tolerance of homosexuals, that it indicates a lessening of their "manhood." They don't really care much about lesbians, because hey, watching two chicks go at it is "fun."

We all know that the whole problem here is that fundamentally, homophobes are deeply insecure about these things and act their feelings out by demeaning and attacking people who are different from them.

17. Why do you hate America
"All men are created equal" is a commie librul idea. What they meant was "all white males who own property"
:sarcasm:
