Sons sentenced, to remain free
By JESSICA LOGAN, Californian staff writer

Bruce Sons was sentenced to 17 years in prison Monday for killing a California Highway Patrol officer in 1994, but he will not spend another day in prison.

Sons served 12 years in jail and prison, but factoring in his credit for good behavior and his work behind bars, that number swells to 20.

Sons was convicted May 9 of voluntary manslaughter for shooting CHP officer Richard Maxwell to death in 1994.

Monday's sentence means Sons will not have to serve any time on parole. The maximum he could have served on parole would have been 3 years.

A restitution of more than $3,000 was also waived because Sons served so many years over in jail and prison.

A long twisted story of hung juries, allegations of police misconduct, and so on.
