Reuters: Avoid canned tuna, US magazine tells pregnant women
Avoid canned tuna, US magazine tells pregnant women
Mon Jun 5, 2006 6:00pm ET

WASHINGTON, June 5 (Reuters) - Pregnant women should not eat canned tuna
because it may contain harmful levels of mercury, Consumer Reports magazine
says, a more cautious approach than recommended by the U.S. government.

Government tests found instances when canned light tuna had as much of the
potentially harmful heavy metal as white tuna, also known as albacore, the
magazine's newest issue said.

Consumer Reports said 6 percent of canned light tuna tested by the FDA "contained
at least as much of the metal -- in some cases more than twice as much --
as the average albacore." Most of the cans had only one-third as much mercury.

Jane Halloran, director of food policy initiatives for Consumers Union, said
due to concerns that both types of tuna showed instances of higher levels
of mercury, it decided to recommend pregnant women eat neither. Consumers Union
publishes Consumer Reports.

1. Uh oh - what will pregnant women eat during the bird flu pandemic??
Since we were all told to store canned tuna under the bed. :silly:

2. Tuna are predatory
Those who still eat flesh would do thier bodies a favor by eating low on the food chain. Fish-wise, the Monterey Bay Aquarium keeps a good list of relatively sustainable and unpoisoned fish by region at http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/sfw_consumers.asp

4. Since I'm now considered "pre-pregnant"...

7. Hmm, is that that same Mercury that is in the preservative Thimerosol
which is in vaccines given to infants? You know that Mercury that supposedly does NOT cause Autism according to big Pharma, and governmental agencies, the CDC and the FDA?! My, I wonder why they are worried?! :sarcasm:

:grr: :grr: :grr:

10. NO link, none, between vaccines with Thimerosal and autism. But that does
not mean that mercury is not dangerous - it's been recognized as dangerous for at least 100 years.
Two SEPARATE, repeat SEPARATE, issues.
Please don't conflate the two.

15. so what if it doesn't cause autism?
It is still toxic as you admitted. I guess poisoning infants is acceptable as long as it saves money for the pharmaceutical companies.

16. Bull-big pharma wants everyone to think they aren't responsible.
It's worth billions of dollars to them to control the information that they are directly responsible for poisoning infants! They have and will do anything to weasel out of any kind of responsibility! The BASTARDS are GUILTY AS HELL! :grr:

BTW-Everyone knows that MERCURY IS POISON and POISONING the brain damages it, especially in infants and fetuses in utero. How are these 2 situations different from each other?!

:wtf:

How about if YOU try and NOT separate the 2 issues because they are EXACTLY the same.

8. Ok, then why is tuna safe for ANYONE?
I applaud the warning for pregnant women. However, what about the rest of us
unpregnant people? What about our children?

I'm assuming that food which contains "harmful levels of mercury" is not safe for any
human being?

Am I wrong?

And what about the tuna pouches? Are those safe? Those store easier under the bed, too! :)
Seriously...are the pouches full of mercury too?

Gads.

11. Fetuses and small children have a developing brain and
thier blood-brain barrier is not well established, so they are more vulnerable to toxins than adults. Also, telling everybody to stay away from tuna (and most other predatory sea creatures) is more than a bit risky politically.
