It is quite sad, because that was a war with no ambiguity or lies. It was truely a war for freedom, where a lot of people lost their lives

and the media and people are more concerned with the mark of the beast?

7. My grandfather was there.
No one seems to give a shit about that.

I've always thought that today should be recognized for what it is. We should be out there, placing flags on veterans graves and thanking them for their contributions. The politicians and fundies have proven that they are not real patriots by turning this day into a joke.

12. He would have liked that
but he wouldn't have asked for it.

He said that it was his job and his duty to defend those that couldn't defend themselves. He passed away 18 months ago.

I don't think he would have liked how this day has become a joke.

33. yes, this a slap in the face for all those who defended us in that
war, D-Day my uncle was involved in that, he passed away a year ago, I think many who fought in WWII would not like what this country has become. sad, very sad.

34. Exactly.
The day has become a joke.

All of the holier-than-thou types who have promoted this day as a day of fear should be ashamed of themselves. Their behavior today is proof enough that they are not real patriots.

I actually teared up, just looking at it, and thinking of all those brave souls who died to ensure that we, their heirs, could live in freedom. Wow.O8)

13. True enough
And yesterday was the anniversary of the liberation of Rome.

You know, in Russia, Victory Day is a major national holiday. Since the end of WWII (September 2nd) falls near Labor Day, I have always thought it might be a good idea to rename the holiday to "Labor and Victory Day", just to remind everyone what our parents and grandparents achieved. I know we have Veterans Day and Memorial Day, but I think WWII was so big it deserves special recognition.

17. Was it really "a war with no ambiguity or lies".
Or did the wizards of media and information do a better job of keeping the pooch away from the curtain (re. Toto and The Wizard of Oz)
Without television Vietnam would have been "a war with no ambiguity or lies".
With the "liberal mass media" locked up by the corporate boot clackers this war would also be "a war with no ambiguity or lies" if it weren't for the internet.
I think to wish for a kinder gentler war of the past without all the hassle of "factual information" is to wish for life in Oz. And I do not mean down under.
I wasn't there. But my dad and about ten uncles were and none of them thought any other thoughts about the war than the ones that the good old USA gave them.
Sacrilegious speech. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

18. there was clarity in that war
There was no ambiguity about Germany invading, and trying to dominate Europe

There was no ambiguity about the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor

25. That is the reason that PTSD wasn't nearly as large an issue...
It certainly existed, but, there's something about just violence that seems to mitigate the effects.

Anecdotally,

21. I am really sad...
That not much is said about these truly great men. We all owe them so much. I would like to thank your grandfather from the bottom of my heart.

Here is Dwight Eisenhower's D Day order:

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Forces: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

I wouldn't claim absolutely no lies or ambiguity, but I would certainly consider WWII a just war for the Allied nations.

26. I posted about it
here at www.airamericaplace.com Although I have the anniversary year wrong. (61 instead of 62).

I had a great uncle that drove a landing craft there. There's also some ambiguity about a second uncle and whether or not he was with the First Armored (in Italy) or the First Infantry (Omaha Beach).

said the following quote about the Battle of Britain, but it still resonates for any event of WWII.

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

28. Thank you for reminding us. Those people who did make it home
built the biggest middle class the world had ever seen. They knew what mattered. And it was one lawn per family..and then civil rights.. and then women's rights.. not in that order... but they got it right in the end.

Less so then normal given the past couple of years. Which is fine with me, given everybody wants to focus on that for some reason and ignore the rest of the war.

31. Thank you! This has been bugging me all day!
This was a seminal event in the history of this country and I only heard this mentioned once, in passing, on CNN, all day. I had it on in the background while I was going about my business and all they spoke about, every thirty seconds, was about the significance of the date, the devil, was anyone else scared and superstitions. I finally couldn't take it anymore and turned it off. America's news channel, my a**!!!:grr:
