Boycott Borders for pushing Ann Coulter's "Godless".
I just unsubscribed from Border's email list because they are promoting Ann Coulter's latest piece of, er "work" prominently in their weekly emails. I suggest that anyone that gets these emails unsubscribe and let them know why.

Here's what I wrote.

I was highly offended by an email I received from you touting Ann Coulter's newest screed "Godless: The Church of Liberalism". As a liberal and a Christian, I find this hate-mongering title revolting. I view Borders' willingness to promote this type of hate-baiting junk intolerable and therefore request that you remove me from your mailing list.

Maybe you live in a state where people are more civil about their politics, but I live in Texas, and if you'd ever experienced the terror of being run off the road just for having a Democratic bumper-sticker on your car, then you might be a little more sensitive regarding the effects this stuff has on people. Free speech is one thing, but in accusing us liberals of "Treason" and of being "Godless," Coulter promotes real hate, and inspires real violence. I know because my children and I have been victims of it.

I see you also carry "The Turner Diaries" and "Mein Kampf," so at least you're being consistent, but in the future I'd prefer not to receive emails from anyone calling me "Godless".

And I choose not to boycott Borders. My choice. I sure as hell ain't buying the book and it's doubtful that many others will either. I am sorry that you and your children have been victims of hatefulness and violence. There is no call for that. But boycotting Borders won't change it either.
On edit- Should we boycott the local libraries as well because they carry right wing books as well as left wing books? I think not. I dislike coulter intensely so I choose not to read her crap, but she has a right to author that crap. It's simple really. If people don't buy coulter's books, then Borders and all other chains will stop selling them.

11. But they don't have to promote them.
I guess my objective was more related to letting Borders know that I didn't approve of their promoting this type of junk, not so much boycotting them.

14. Actually yes they have
you have no idea who is paying for it. The publishing house pays the bookstores to promote their authors. It is not Borders, they are getting paid for it, and very good money by the way. Oh and I expect this to be at sale at Cosco, should I stop going to Cosco too?

By the way I am a profesional Author...

17. They have a choice what they promote
And I chose to unsubscribe from their mailing list and let them know why. If you got an email from them promoting "God Hates Fags: The Reverend Phelps Story" wouldn't you be offended? I'm not promoting censorship, just better choices regarding what the company pushes.

20. It isn't about them carrying the book
It's about them promoting it. THere are hundreds of books that come out each week, so why are they promoting a book that promotes hate?

I have other book shopping options so I have no problem with boycotting BOrders

4. Borders tends to promote all political books
They've given amazing placement to liberal books. We're not going to die because Ann Coulter sells a few books. You have a right to be pissed at right wingers, but Borders is not in the business of banning books because readers of certain books happen to be clinically insane hatemongers.

12. I don't mind that they carry her book, just that they promote it
Specifically this one. I think the title is designed to foment hatred and violence towards liberals.

6. oh good lord
relax. it's a bookstore, their job is to sell books, including, and expecially, ones that you don't like, or that offend you. Must we get worked up about everything? Would you have gotten just as offended if it was an Al Franken book? Surely someone on the list would have. If we run away from everything, soon there is no converstation at all.

your email system does have a delete key, right?

7. They're in the business of selling books.
Not liberal-friendly books. Books.

Coulter's diatribe qualifies as a book. It was released today, and I guess Borders would like to compete against other booksellers to get the business of any misguided RW fool who wants to give them money for it.

16. No
Just that they be more judicious regarding which books they promote. Wouldn't you be offended if you got an email from them that had a big advertisement for Mein Kampf's 60 year aniversary reprinting? They carry the book, which I don't have a problem with, but they don't have to shill it. Any clearer?

21. Borders is usually very good - they usually showcase OUR books
I live in a Republican area and they would have every single one of the anti-Bush books displayed all over the place during the last election. I hardly ever saw any of the pro-Bush books around.

23. That's not the point.
The title and content of this book go too far. They should have the good sense not to promote crap like this. Carrying it is fine.
