Display Will Give Meat-Eaters Pause as ‘Cowboy’ Gets Basted and Grilled
Display Will Give Meat-Eaters Pause as ‘Cowboy’ Gets Basted and Grilled

For Immediate Release:
June 6, 2006

Contact:
Mike Brazell 757-622-7382

Topeka, Kan. — Hoping to prompt Topeka’s lunch crowd into realizing that whether fish, foul—or even Frank!—a corpse is a corpse, PETA will slather a 10-gallon-hat-wearing effigy of a cowboy with barbecue sauce and pretend to cook "him" on a mock grill downtown tomorrow. PETA’s point? That all animals are made of flesh, bone, and blood, just as humans are, and that eating meat entails eating the corpse of an animal who was an individual with feelings, a family, and a distinct personality. In addition to the "human barbecue," activists will hold signs that read, "Meat Is Murder," and give out delicious vegetarian riblet sandwiches to curious passersby:

Date: Wednesday, June 7
Time: 12 noon-1 p.m.
Place: Corner of S.W. Eighth and S. Kansas avenues

"People are understandably revolted by the idea of eating a human corpse, which is exactly why they should also lose their appetites at the thought of eating an animal corpse—to smell them cooking, you can’t tell the difference," says PETA Campaign Coordinator Mike Brazell.

Free food and a cowboy effigy (hmmmmm). Maybe they should pass out pretzles as well

11. I Agree... I Used To Be A Member Of PETA... Until That Idea They
had some years back where they had someone urinating on something. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it turned me off right away. They do come up with some strange ways to act out.

I prefer to help locally with ASPCA, or on occasion NRDC with Robert Kennedy, Jr.

3. I really don't understand PETA's strategy...
It seems like they're more interested in stunts and dumb proclamations than actually winning support for their cause. I just chuckled thinking back to when they demanded the Green Bay Packers change their name. Do they really think pretending to BBQ a human is going to make people stop wanting to eat a steak or a hamburger?

53. They have horrible ad campaigns.
There was a recent one comparing the plight of animal cruelty to slavery, and one before that comparing it to the Holocaust.

They may be provocative, but I don't know how the hell these tactics attract new members.

7. My favorite PETA street performance was two women wrasslin' in tofu...
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 03:43 PM by Dunvegan
...in a kiddy pool, in bikinis, right in the heart of the Financial District in San Francisco at high noon.

One guy with his sig-other was staring so hard, he didn't notice his mouth had fallen completely open. Suddenly, his SO grabbed him and drug him off stage right.

While the tofu match was on-going, they gave out huge and delicious veggie burritos to the crowd.

I didn't have to buy lunch, and the entertainment factor (both wrestlers and crowd) were quite enjoyable.

37. I don't agree 100% with PETA. In fact, I can't think of any organization
that I agree with 100%

So, with my very limited means, I choose those organizations that I seem to agree MOST with. Will this particular stunt work? I dunno. But I applaud them for trying.

People LOVE to bash PETA. It seems strange that they draw so much anger and hatred on a "progressive" board.

I don't care what group it is, you do something silly I am gonna comment on it :)

I think most folks in the US are pretty decent at heart, but there are some serious wack jobs we call out and discuss. PETA has a mission I generally disagree with, and I am not sure I would call them progressive myself - their goals affect me and my life and choices. They would love to restrict my rights to eat things I want.

I don't mind their educational aspect though - converting people to do things your way is fine by me, but when you label people who don't agree with you murderers and so on, well I don't think that is progressive.

They do stunts, they get free advertising and get people to talk about the issues. They do more traditional ad placements etc and the response is much more muted. That's why you all know who PETA is though most people couldn't name five other AR organizations to save thier lives.

I would seriously doubt that anyone in PETA thinks this will stop people eating meat, but it gets the name out there, get people talking about it on a mssg board etc

I'm a meat eater and will be till the day I die, however where it not for PETA and their "propaganda" I wouldn't know nearly half as much as I do about the cruelties of factory farming, nor the health effects for humans of eating factory farmed animals. It's thanks to people like PETA that I am able to make an informed choice about the meat I buy - free range and organic.

ConAgra certainly weren't gonna tell me about the shit in the meat

55. Why don't they just show video of chickens being
hung up by their feet one after the other on a conveyor belt and being whisked along to big sharp blades spinning that chop their heads off with the spurting blood etc?

I think the LOOK on the chicken's face at the one being diced right BEFORE HE hits the blade would be the most effective picture in their PR campaign..

I gave up meat for about three months after watching an asian market program where they boiled cats alive and ate anything that cast a shadow, many things they loved to eat while it still fought for breath.. thought about animals I had known and their personalities, but eventually I had to put it aside and eat meat, I hate doing it, but I just don't have the energy level to live on lettuce and sprouts, never been satisfied with meatless meals, starving each time..

I still feel guilt but have come to terms with the fact that we live in a vampire universe where all beings steal the energy and life force of others to stay alive, or they will die or get ill..

Wierd to say, this weekend I actually got to swim with dolphins, touch them, kiss them on the face, give them belly busters with my lips, and with my young 17 month old son with us in the tank swimming together.. one of the dolphins had a baby, cute as a button and I had mine, amazingly enough this beautiful creature, the one that was a new mother kept making the trainer made by coming over to me and my son and not listening to commands.. the dolphin and I were sharing our children with each other and we had a little bond going..

for some reason I've never felt better in my life, I swear to god dolphins BEAM good feelings into people, for one thing we represent a holographic image to them, they "see" our blood pressure, some can identify tumors (natural ultrasound), and some studies show that autistic children (and I suspect just about anyone) BENEFIT from being around these wonderful and intelligent grinning mammals..

I believe it now, I felt it.. so I was sort of making jokes about how the Japanese folks weren't allowed on the tour because they keep taking bites out of the dolphins, some people thought it funny, at least I did, and the dolphins were laughing the whole time :)

PETA, get new writers, eh? The Tofu wrestling sounds great, but these other tantrums look like just that..

one next to them might happen to them. If you stand in a farmyard full of chickens, pick one up, wring its neck and put the limp body back among the others, they will peck around it as if nothing had happened. Abstract thought is utterly beyond them. They really are incredibly stupid.

Dolphins, however, I agree - incredibly, almost eerily sensitive and intelligent.

67. Well yeah, meat is meat
That's never bothered me before. I was always puzzled by people who refused to think of the meat they were eating as once being an animal.

I've said before that if it were allowed, when I die I'd have my body disposed of somewhere in the woods to decompose and be eaten by scavengers.

68. I've always thought it would be great if I was served at, say,
Tavern on the Green after I'm gone. In some south pacific cultures the villagers ritualisticly ate the dead at the funeral.
