Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 12:04 AM by lostnfound
Call me crazy, call me snakebit. The theft of data on 50,000 soldiers was fishy, but now that they admit data on 2.2 MILLION soldiers was stolen, I jump to the conclusion that every other appalled liberal might jump to: Karl Rove??

How useful would it be for the GOP to have data on all those soldiers, if you wanted to fraudulently file voter registrations or absentee ballots on people who are perhaps less likely to be focused on a mid-term election and more likely to be focused on not getting their heads blown off in some hellhole ("hellhole" courtesy of certain chickenhawk "leaders")?

1. Question is, where would rove/bushco draw the line?
I don't think there is a line they wouldn't cross to get what they want.

2. Hmmmm, I don't see that happening.
Sure, some of those vets would do absentee, but if you had a rash of vets screaming that they tried to vote and couldnt because the voter info said they already ahd file an absentee ballot, you'd have a national riot!

Even with the right info, the absentee ballot is mailed to your home!

aw, in this case, I think your stretching it!

3. Wouldn't be so sure. And how would an absentee ballot for an active duty
soldier benefit that soldier if it is sent to home rather than duty station? I believe ballots are sent back via military sorta mail. Wouldn't there be a big chance of a SNAFU somewhere in the system if somebody wanted one?

Maybe we can get some active duty (and away from home) DUers to let us know how their voting works. It might help to look into how to secure their votes are counted accurately.

4. I don't buy the argument that the VA needs active duty lists
The transfer of that private data from one government agency to another is a privacy act violation in and of itself.

This theft is highly political.

5. Didn't Bush launder money to fund his reelection campaign?
These people would station Minutemen at the polls to gun down blacks and other "Democrat-looking" people if they thought they needed to in order to win.

8. Nah. But something seems to be up. Thiefs have gotten lucky
in the past few years. Conspicuously lucky. Theft from major card companies and credit agencies; theft from major retailers just for a couple of examples. Remember this one from a year ago?... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8260050/
MSNBC

Viewed by the numbers, it's the largest security breach made public in recent memory.

An "unauthorized individual" infiltrated the computer network of a third-party payment processor and may have stolen up to 40 million credit card numbers, MasterCard International revealed Friday. All brands of credit cards were exposed in the attack; about 14 million of the 40 million accounts exposed were MasterCard accounts, the firm said.
<snip>

The fact is, there's billions to be made in selling that data (well, DUH!). And the fact is, while the government is prohibited from collecting data like this, they are not prohibited from buying it.
