Gay marriage amendment fails in Senate
Gay marriage amendment fails in Senate
Senate defeats FMA

On a procedural vote, the United States Senate has voted 49 in favor and 48 against cloture to continue debate on the Marriage Protection Amendment, formerly known as the Federal Marraige Amendment. Cloture requires 60 votes. Had it gotten to the floor, it would need 67 Senate votes (two-thirds) and two-thirds of the House to advance to the states where three-quarters (38) would be needed to ratify it.) on the cloture Approval of the cloture motion would have meant continued debate on the amendment.

The vote, largely along party lines, means that the effort to amdend the Constitution to restrict marriages to one man and one woman is effectively over for the 109th Congress. Regardless, the House will take up the measure next week.

3. Good. They voted down a ludicrous amendment.
 :toast:

I'm happy, but still somewhat weary, because they still have plenty of ludicrous things up their sleeves...

4. And thus comes to an end another diversionary, divisive tactic
Meanwhile as this plays out, the illegal, immoral war continues in Iraq, the Bushco administration continues to gather more and more power to itself, our country continues an economic slide, etc. etc.

Don't get me wrong, I support and sympathize with the GLBT community on issues such as these, and I realize that this is important to them. But this amendment proposal was nothing more than a diversionary tactic from the get-go. And sadly, it worked.

6. They are desperate to get this stupid amendment onto the 2006
ballots because that is the only way they'll energize the fundy nutcase base enough to get them to the polls. They know damned full well they can't win without the bigot vote and they're willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

They will simply keep trying again and again. This isn't going away because the bastards see it as their only hope to retain power in Congress. No matter how many times the Senate throws it out, the House will keep on passing it. The GOP is that desperate.
