Iraq Investigator Tells AP About Haditha

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A small group of U.S. Marines alleged to have killed up to two dozen Iraqi civilians conducted a house-to-house hunt that stretched over three hours, while other Marines in Haditha did not intervene, according to an Iraqi human rights investigator.

...

About a month after the killings, al-Hadithi said, a Marine major refused a request by the victims' families to offer a formal apology, arguing that the Iraqis were killed in the roadside bombing or caught in crossfire between the Marines and insurgents.

The officer, whose name al-Hadithi said he could not remember, also warned them that the next time a roadside bomb hits a Marine convoy in Haditha he would order an airstrike to level anything within 500 yards.

1. Ah! The old "destroy it to save it plan." It worked well in Vietnam.
:sarcasm:

2. When honor is lost
An officer?

How high a rank would an officer have to hold to be in a position to order an air strike? That sounds like someone who is not on the front lines.

It is sadly disturbing what is happening in our military. Marines are supposed to be tough and honorable, not soulless and corrupt.

3. My god, the man really believes they got caught in the crossfire
He sees house to house searches for insurgents over hours after the event to be "crossfire". They got in the way because the Americans were searching for insurgents; the fact insurgents weren't presently there is just a technicality. They were still "in battle".

The man really, seriously believes that.

I gather that's the basis for the legal defense too.

4. That's 101.42 city blocks (500-yard radius circle)
"Destroy it to save it", indeed. There's be nothing left after the first dozen IEDs...

5. You know, there's no excuse for this. But it IS an invitable outgrowth of
a shitty, ill-conceived war of occupation on a civilian population that doesn't want us there. Just like Vietnam. Only solution is to get the fuck out NOW.

6. They don't even know why they are there anymore. It's as if
Iraq had been engaged in some kind of war against the united states prior to this conquest. The marines are part of the problem not part of the solution.
