Randi is on and just won't listen
I think this caller is right. He's trying to tell Randi that her style could be modified and that she shouldn't talk over others. Randi responds by twisting what's he saying. Randi, please listen. We can all learn things.

1. I agree
I have a hard time with Randi sometimes for this very reason. I don't mind her tough attitude, but I think it's awful to shout people down like that. Not a very effective way to win hearts and minds.

2. I disagree with you.
I think that both the caller and Randi have valid points, but Randi said very pointedly that the difference between her and Annthrax is that she has facts. The caller would like there to be a difference elsewhere. But Randi isn't selling that. The difference is where it is, and the caller can find a different station if he doesn't like her. While I agree with the frustration with Randi sometimes, you can't wish for a personality to change in just the way you want it to. He asked what the difference between them is, and she answered. It's just that her answer wasn't to his liking.

20. yep, objective and even-handed aint the same
I used to listen to right wing talk radio when I had a job that required a lot of driving, and I am still struck by how contentless it is compared to Pacifica or even Air America. The right essential picks up the days newspaper, their fax from Karl Rove, and that's all they have or want. Even when there is room for substantive critical questions for Democrats, they stick to the shallow talking points.

Saying they are the same is like saying an opera and an episode of HeeHaw is the same.

3. Stopped listening to her a long time ago for this very reason.
There's a difference between being tough and being rude.

5. and yet you're still listening
her style is what's got her listeners. I suspect the market research she's done let's her know her style works.

8. Lack of alternatives
I want to listen to someone who has a political viewpoint to mine and who gives me facts. This leaves out the RW nuts.
Stephanie Miller's show is very funny but she still has great news segments about what the RW nuts are up to.
Thom Hartmann is also great but his shows usually do not cover the daily news but instead broad topics that transcend today's happenings. Those two are my favorites. I suppose I should just listen to them and avoid Randi's show.

16. I Don't Agree With That.
I think the fact that we have no other liberal on the radio during that time slot is what got her listeners. If any other strong liberal voice was on the air at that time I'd switch over in a heartbeat, with all due respect.

But as long as she's the only one on the dial at that time I'll listen, as long as she's not being obnoxious and rude.

7. The guy said he sometimes agrees with The Hag (Colter).
That's all I had to hear from him. He's a jerk.

I have some problems with Randi, but I am certainly not going to pay any attention to someone who sometimes argrees with Colter.

10. Enough Said...
He couldn't have anything worthwhile to say--and even if he did, he doesn't deserve to be heard On-Air.

9. If that's what the caller was trying to say...
If that's what the caller was trying... then if I'd been Randi I'd have cut him short too. On-Air is not the appropriate venue to lecture one of our political pundits on her style--there are more important things to be covered (Air-time is expensive and limited). That should be covered off-line (be it by email or whatever).

15. Actually, why did the screener let him on?
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 04:17 PM by in search of sanity
I also don't want air time wasted on style matters when there's so much news to be covered.
I also wonder whether Randi would have been more courteous to him off the air. It's pretty hard to take personal criticism like that on the air.

11. I've never really kept Randi Rhodes in my regular rotation..
...though I'll pop in occasionally.

After seeing the Dobbs thing, and based on my limited listening experience, I think she works from the perspective that it's her gig and as such she runs the show. So when she has to deal with other folks, whether they be callers or panelists, she tends to assert her points more. Nothing majorly wrong with that from a "preaching to the choir" standpoint (though some of the shoir are clearly miffed about it), butI don't think it's a very effective method of doing things, especially if you're wanting to reach out to folks other than liberals. I'm not even talking about trying convert conservatives, I mean the mushy, typically detached middle.

14. I agree with you this time. The guy was courteous and made sense.
She would make a pause, and as soon as he would try to speak, she would go on ranting again. She did not handle that well at all. She should listen more. i think it's pretty easy to tell when a caller is well-meaning and when s/he is not. When s/he is a RW'er, then by all means dump them. I am not interested in hearing those. But callers like this ... not a good policy.

You seem to be as certain he was a freeper as I was that he wasn't a freeper. Go figure.

19. Randi Rhodes is the GODDESS of talk radio.
And I won't even try and hide the fact that I'm insanely biased in saying that. I listen to her show every day and absolutely love her. I know her style is not for everyone, and a lot of people, especially on DU, think she is a horrible spokesperson for the issues and party she cares about because of her brash, brutally honest, uncontrollable enthusiasm for the issues she cares about, but, hell, that's why I love her!
