Guardian reveals plans for global "liberal" domination
Tuesday, 6 June 2006

Guardian Newspapers chief executive Carolyn McCall has revealed plans for the company to follow News International and further expand into the US.

Last week Times editor Robert Thomson revealed that his paper was to start publishing a US edition in New York this week, to coincide with the start of the World Cup.

She told delegates at the World Newspapers Congress in Moscow: "Our ambition is to be the leading global liberal voice." And she has revealed that the company is soon to announce expansion of its US web operation, more US-based staff and development of a print product.

In March, the latest month for which there are full ABC Electronic figures, Guardian Unlimited was visited by nearly 12.9 million unique users who viewed 137 million pages.

1. Indeed they will!
I can hear fundy sphincters snapping shut all over the Country as I type! This is fabulous news imo, they have been broadening their US coverage for some time now.

2. The Guardian Weekly (intl edition) is already excellent.
And my father, who travels globally for work, swears by the facility that lets you view images of the UK print edition.

4. I thought about getting it
The price ($132/year) seemed a bit steep though.

3. Go Guardian!
Possibly one of the best publishing houses in the world, and news to be trusted.

The Guardian is great but it's not the most liberal of UK newspapers (The Independent holds the title IMO) and it has moved far from its working class roots in Manchester.

The Guardian is certainly a left wing publication, more so than The Independent in fact, but it toes the "New Labour" party line a little too much for my taste. It consistently supported the war in Iraq for example... and that ain't liberal.
