Pentagon hopes DNA tests will prove bin Laden is dead (Filed: 11/02/2002)

WITH Osama bin Laden still outside the grasp of his pursuers, the American press indicated yesterday that faith in the Pentagon's performance was running short.

Leading newspapers questioned the way the hunt has been conducted and there was criticism of the growing number of Afghan civilian casualties from American bombs.

However, the Pentagon was pinning its hopes on the results from DNA tests on casualties of an attack by missiles from an unmanned Predator aircraft. Officials believe that one of the victims was bin Laden.

Reports at the end of last week concluded that the drone had hit civilian scrap metal collectors, but Pentagon officials said that one of the men in the group attacked could have been bin Laden.

Grainy film from the Predator showed a man who was considerably taller than the rest, accompanied by bodyguards. Bin Laden is about 6ft 4in tall. US investigators have already taken DNA samples from members of the al-Qa'eda leader's Saudi family.
