Kerry: OK, bad guy Zarqawi is dead - now, let's get the troops out
Statement by John Kerry on the Death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi

“Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a brutal terrorist and his death strikes a blow to al-Qaeda in Iraq. This ruthless thug who abused the true meaning of Islam was an intruder on Iraqi soil and it’s good news that he’s dead. Our troops did an incredible job hunting him down and destroying him, and all of America is proud of their skill and commitment.

“With the end of al-Zarqawi and the confirmation of the final vital cabinet ministries in Iraq’s new government, it’s another sign that it’s time for Iraqis to stand up for Iraq, bring the factions together, end the insurgency, and run their own country. Our troops have done their job in Iraq, and they’ve done it valiantly. It’s time to work with the new Iraqi government to bring our combat troops home by the end of this year.”

19. and to cover up all their past atrocities supporting Mideast terrorists
for decades through their covert dealings - IranContra and BCCI have the full stories, and that is no doubt why Clinton closed the books for Poppy.

than they do any commitment to Americans. The global fascist agenda is their priority.

18. Great point, Senator! This is just one more reason why it is time for us
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 05:57 PM by _dynamicdems
to bring the troops home. Not at some imaginary point on the horizon. Start planning our exit for God's sake. It can be done by year's end if the Administration would just get off their asses. Good for Senator Kerry for driving it home that there isn't any point in our remaining in Iraq.

Yup, time for Bush to get off his ass and bring our troops home.

A nice start would be fireing Donald Rumsfeld and putting someone like...General Clark in there as Secretary of Defense to manage the withdrawal.

That would make too much sense though. Better to keep the Chickenhawks in charge of our military. :sarcasm:

20. Premature conclusion in there.
We won't know whether Zarqawi's death is really "a blow" to al-Qaeda for a while, and we aren't really sure how many of these thugs operate under that name. If the violence doesn't slow significantly, it wasn't the major victory that the * Administration is touting.

I suspect that Zarqawi's death will galvanize those who similarly endorse and perpetrate violence, and that the sheer number of insurgent groups and their loose organizations will obscure any effect of Zarqawi's death.

I know, I know--any port in a storm. We shouldn't be in Iraq at all. Kerry is right in saying that he bears some responsibility for the war, and it's important to end it quickly. Zarqawi's death is not a particularly good excuse to cite, though, particularly if the Republicans are willing/forced to admit that it doesn't stop the violence.

We need to pull out of this war becasue it's wrong, period.

21. Kerry has put forth two withdrawal plans - His point here is to take the
WH's own exaggerations of Zarqawi over the years and make them part of the debate on why it's time to start withdrawal discussions in earnest.

22. Zarqawi's death won't amount to squat overall.
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 11:53 AM by Roland99
He had a personal vendetta against Shiites and worked to foment sectarian violence but there are plenty of others out there just like him.

23. Kudos to Kerry, but it would be nice if he said the same in public as he
does in his emails or on websites. Did he happen to say the things you quoted while speaking in the national spotlight somewhere?

He rarely gets the attention of the TV media because he rarely says the same things publicly that he does in all his emails or web statements. About the only guy who says the same on TV as he does online is Howard Dean.

24. Kerry sent his statement to the media - it was used as a news item and
got some coverage as a statement from a war critic.
