Estate Tax repeal defeated!

On a vote of 57-41, the Senate blocked consideration of a bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives that would wipe out what Republicans call the "death tax."

Whaddya know, kinda surprises me the # of senators voted to block it.

5. So It Never Made The Vote
They didn't actually reject it, so much as it did not get the 60 votes required in order to bring about a vote.

Looks like there were 4 Democrat defections also. Bauchus, Lincoln, and Both Nelsons voted Yea for Cloture.

The only Repubs to defect and vote against Cloture were Chafee and Voinovich.

Rockefeller & Schumer did not cast votes at all.

They needed 60 votes to bring it to the floor, and it only got 57. If they had gotten it to a vote, it could have passed, right? So long as they ended up with at least 50 in favor.

6. that is correct
It probably would have passed in final vote. The votes not cast are good enough as No votes because they needed 60 Yes votes.

7. A lot of the top 1% Bush republicans will be very upset
After all, their kids need all the millions they can get, life as a super wealthy person is so expensive nowadays! (sarcasm)

Anyway, Frist is still going to try again later this year for his suffering mega multi-millionaire supporters.

8. Can't The Nelsons Just Switch With Chafee & Voinovich?
Why don't the Nelsons just go over to the repub side, and we'll take Chafee & Voinovich?

The Nelsons always seem to want to vote along with the repubs, while Chafee & Voinovich are the more likely to be willing to vote with the dems.

I've read that Chuck Shuner will support a "compromise" proposal.
