Democrats statements on the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi
"Sooner or later evil people meet their just desserts. The entire world of people who believe in freedom and peace can take solace in what happened." - Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

"Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a brutal terrorist and his death strikes a blow to al-Qaida in Iraq. This ruthless thug who abused the true meaning of Islam was an intruder on Iraqi soil and it's good news that he's dead. Our troops did an incredible job hunting him down and destroying him, and all of America is proud of their skill and commitment." - Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on al Zarkawi

"As a leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al Zarkawi was responsible for despicable attacks that claimed the lives of too many Iraqis and Americans. I saw firsthand the terrible consequences of Zarqawi's terrorist network when Bill, Chelsea and I visited the hotel ballroom in Amman, Jordan last November where Zarqawi's followers had detonated a bomb at a wedding party, killing and wounding innocent people. We owe our thanks to our men and women in uniform and others in Iraq who have been fighting Zarqawi and other insurgents and who are responsible for today's success.

I hope that this will be a blow to the insurgency in Iraq and affords an opportunity for the new Iraqi government to build on this success and provide greater security and stability for the Iraqi people"

Statement By Senator Boxer On The Death Of Al-Zarqawi

Thursday, June 8, 2006

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi deserved the end that he got and I am grateful to our Armed Forces for his demise.

Al-Zarqawi brought al Qaeda to Iraq and it is estimated that he is responsible for 10 percent of the most brutal terrorist attacks.

I support this type of targeted mission for our troops, which can be achieved from the region while Iraqi security forces provide for the day to day security of their own people.

STATEMENT OF U.S. SENATOR DICK DURBIN ON TEH ELIMINATION OF ABU MUSAB AL-ZARQAWI

Thursday, June 8, 2006

– Senate Assistant Democratic Leader Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today issued the following statement after the successful operation by U.S. forces in Iraq that eliminated terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi:

“The elimination of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is a testament to the skill, perseverance and dedication of our men and women in uniform and our intelligence community.”

“Al-Zarqawi has been a source of murder and terrorism for entirely too long. And the fact that he is now gone from the scene holds out the hope that we can move towards a more peaceful resolution in Iraq.”

“Also the news that the Iraqi parliament has approved new Defense and Interior ministers shows that are Iraqis are willing to stand on their own. And that is what we must see – not just the elimination of the bad actors like al-Zarqawi, but the Iraqis finally acting to make certain that their nation can move forward without an American military presence.”

“The real test of our success in Iraq is when American troops have been safely redeployed and begin coming home. That is when the American people will know that our investment – all the lives and the sacrifices – has been well placed.”

1. Full Kerry statement
http://kerry.senate.gov/v3/cfm/record.cfm?id=256690

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a brutal terrorist and his death strikes a blow to al-Qaeda in Iraq. This ruthless thug who abused the true meaning of Islam was an intruder on Iraqi soil and it’s good news that he’s dead. Our troops did an incredible job hunting him down and destroying him, and all of America is proud of their skill and commitment.

“With the end of al-Zarqawi and the confirmation of the final vital cabinet ministries in Iraq’s new government, it’s another sign that it’s time for Iraqis to stand up for Iraq, bring the factions together, end the insurgency, and run their own country. Our troops have done their job in Iraq, and they’ve done it valiantly. It’s time to work with the new Iraqi government to bring our combat troops home by the end of this year.”

Still looking up some after seeing a few blurbs on one site (decided to just go directly to Senators' sites directly after that, still looking but also working a report for work).

Comment Of Sen. Patrick Leahy
On The President's Announcement
That Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Has Been Killed
Thursday, June 8, 2006

"The President's announcement that our military forces have found Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and that they have ended his role in masterminding his share of the mayhem and murder that plagues Iraq is a relief to our entire nation. Our gratitude goes out to our brave men and women in Iraq, who have persisted under the most dangerous and trying circumstances that any of us can imagine. We all know that this in itself will not end the violence or resolve the complex and dangerous difficulties that remain in Iraq, but this is a murderous terrorist whose personal reign of terror has been brought to a just end."

5. Reid's statement
http://reid.senate.gov/newsroom/record.cfm?id=256714&

Washington, DC — Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid today released the following statement on the killing of terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq by U.S. forces, and the naming of key security Ministers.

“This is a good day for the Iraqi people, the U.S military and our intelligence community. Zarqawi was a cold blooded killer who got what he deserved. Yesterday’s mission and its successful outcome are a testament to the courage and skill of all those serving on the front lines.

“There is considerable and difficult work ahead to stabilize Iraq. But with the death of Zarqawi and the naming of key Iraqi security ministers, today is a day to recognize these important achievements.”

8. Feingold's statement
http://feingold.senate.gov/~feingold/statements/06/06/20060608.htm

June 8, 2006

“I commend our military forces for their great accomplishment. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a ruthless terrorist who led an insurgent campaign of brutal suicide bombings, kidnappings and hostage beheadings in Iraq. This is great news for the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people. It is also a testament to the professionalism and capability of the men and women in uniform in the U.S. military and the effectiveness of well-planned and targeted operations.

Unfortunately, al-Zarqawi’s death will probably not end the insurgency. As long as large numbers of U.S. troops remain indefinitely in Iraq, that country will remain a crucible for the recruitment and development of a wide range of terrorist networks determined to fight so-called American ‘occupiers.’ It’s time to refocus our global fight against terrorism. We must move away from the Iraq-centric policies that are draining our resources and focus on Al Qaeda and its affiliates who are reportedly operating in some 60 to 80 countries around the world.”

6. Levin Statement on the Death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi
Levin Statement on the Death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi

WASHINGTON – Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement today regarding the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi:

The developments in Iraq today are encouraging, but major challenges remain in achieving political stability so critically important to defeating the insurgents and avoiding civil war.

The death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi will hopefully be a serious setback to al Qaeda and the religious fanatics in Iraq, but the major problem in Iraq remains the sectarian violence rather than the threat posed by al Qaeda.

The Iraqi Parliament’s approval of the ministers of defense, national security and the interior is a positive and encouraging development in the establishment of a national unity government under Prime Minster Maliki. The Iraqis must now turn to the difficult but critical task of amending their constitution to make it a unifying and inclusive document. The United States should be pressing Iraqi leaders to complete this essential task within the four-month period provided for in the constitution.

13. Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson

NELSON STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF ZARQAWI AND PROGRESS IN IRAQ

Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson issued the following statement today on the death of al Qeada leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and progress in Iraq:

“The U.S. military and the Iraqi military forces should be congratulated for the successful coordination and execution of the operation that resulted in the elimination of al Qaeda’s top leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

“As one of the most visible leaders of terrorism and sectarian violence in Iraq, this is a significant development in advancing the security and stability of Iraq and it is a victory in the war against terrorism. Coupled with the seventeen raids on known al Qaeda locations, this is a considerable blow to al Qeada both in terms of Zarqawi’s death and the intelligence gathered on al Qeada operations. We can be proud of this achievement and we must remain focused on our mission in Iraq. Obstacles still exist; the insurgency is not over and challenges remain.”

Obama Statement on the Death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today released the following statement on the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi:

"I am proud that American troops, with the help of Iraqis, were able to find and kill Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. He was a brutal monster whose single-minded goal was to sow instability and the death of innocent Iraqis and American forces.

"While this successful attack will not completely end the insurgency in Iraq, it does strike a major blow against al Qaeda and gives hope to the possibility of a secure and stable Iraq. It is an encouraging development that should fill Americans and Iraqis with pride."

15. statement by Senator John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV
VICE CHAIRMAN Rockefeller STATEMENT ON THE DEATH of ABU MUSAB AL-ZARQAWI

Washington, DC -- The following is a statement by Senator John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV on the death of the al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

“This is a remarkable achievement for the men and women of the armed forces and intelligence agencies. I commend them for their relentless and successful pursuit of Abu Musab al Zarqawi. He was a ruthless murderer and we can only hope his death will bring about change in Iraq. While this is a significant accomplishment, it will take some time before we know the full impact of removing Zarqawi, and we must be realistic about expecting a reduction in the overall level of violence.

“There is no question that Zarqawi was a visible symbol of the violence. He was known for both sadistic attacks and trying to provoke a civil war between the Sunnis and Shias.

“At the same time, he and his organization, al Qa’ida in Iraq, are only a part of the violence there. The foreign jihadists make up a very small percentage of the broader insurgency, and al Qa’ida is one group within that jihadist movement. The bulk of the insurgency is comprised of former regime elements and others who want to drive the United States out of Iraq. The next largest group contributing to the violence is the sectarian militias loyal to radical factions such as that of Muqtada al-Sadr. The jihadists are the smallest component with the least support among the Iraqi population.

“As Zarqawi’s attacks have been indiscriminate and especially vicious, we can only hope that his death will result in a reduction of some of the most deplorable acts we have witnessed.

“Zarqawi’s death combined with the announcement of the completion of the Iraqi government means this is a good day for Iraq, but there is a long way to go.”

16. Biden's statement
http://biden.senate.gov/newsroom/details.cfm?id=256696&

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) issued the following statement regarding the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi:

“This is great news and a very significant hit. It’s a tribute to the skill of our men and women in uniform. Zarqawi’s death is a blow to one of the real sources of terror and violence in Iraq right now: jihadists and foreign fighters. But there are two other problem groups comprising the bulk of fighting and violence in Iraq: the ex-Ba’athist insurgents and the sectarian militias who have infiltrated the Iraqi police and army. These groups are primarily responsible for the sectarian violence now plaguing Iraq. Zarqawi’s death deals a significant setback to the jihadists, but has no impact on the ex-Ba’athists and the militias.

“I urge the President to use Zarqawi’s demise to push for three things to end the growing sectarian violence, which threatens to blow up into civil war. First, we must push the new ministers of Interior and Defense to purge the sectarian militias from the army and police. Second, we should urge the government to meet the deadline to amend the Constitution within four months to gain Sunni buy-in. Third, we should – through with the UN Security Council – convene a regional conference in which Iraq’s neighbors agree to a hands-off policy and create a mechanism to enforce that agreement.”

could say about whatever they wanted to.

Unless they fear that the majority would not agree with them. And if that is the case, we might be in some trouble one of these days....So it's either lie, BS, or tell how you really feel.

Me, I want someone I am paying to lead my country to cut the BS and tell me what they feel.

Johnson Reacts to Death of Terrorist al-Zarqawi
Thursday, June 8, 2006

Washington, DC--U.S. Senator Tim Johnson released the following remarks on the death of Al Qaeda terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi:

"I think this is a real victory in our war against terror. Zarqawi was a bad guy. He really is the personification of evil in that part of the world. So I think this is a success, and I applaud our military in their success with this strike.

"On the other hand, I think we also need to be realistic about this…That his death does not mean the end of the insurgency. In fact, if anything the insurgency could be even more aggressive as those violent terrorists respond to this incident.

"But I think that it does take away a major strategist on the part of those who are trying to impose terror on the world. While it isn't going to change everything overnight, it is certainly a very successful circumstance for the United States and for peace loving people everywhere."
