What are the Top Ten Things we should be discussing?
The news drifts by and so do subject lines here, it's fascinating to watch, the cycles of discussion.

Some of the subjects do seem like time wasters, but, the news is the news, and folks will talk, and then move on to the next Bush outrage.

But what SHOULD we be discussing more than anything? I can think of at least ten things, but it'd be nice to have some input on this.

2. My Top Ten:

10. What we each are doing LOCALLY to win in 2006 elections - to campaign, to get out the vote, to prevent theft of the elections (inhibit, detect, fight back!).

4. Only US citizens should vote
It's just plain wrong for anybody but US citizens to vote, and you're wrong if you help them do it.

9. Breaking the law is SOOO REPUBLICAN.
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 05:50 AM by IndyOp
WHO ARE YOU? Sign up illegal immigrants?

That is against the law - and breaking the law is SOOO REPUBLICAN.

WE do NOT need to break the law to win - we just need clean and fair elections - every registered US citizen votes once and only once. We WIN.

11. I don't like limiting the number, but........
Some of those already mentioned, for sure, including:

Remove and arrest all corrupt officials.

Eliminate computer voting machines.

Eliminate the electoral college.

Arrest all war criminals and war profiteers.

I would not make the minimum wage $15 right away. Too many small
businesses would have to close up, as they would not be able to pay
their bills. That wouldn't help anyone.

Also, I would make some people participate in their health care costs,
like those earning over $100,000 (or some such arbitrary figure). Also,
if all medications are free, the pharmaceutical industry has to be
watched so that they make enough to be induced to do the research to
develop new medicines, but at the same time not be able to gouge the
government with any price they desire, à la Halliburton. That having been
said, health care reform is LONG overdue.

I'd also make the penalties for deliberate large-scale environmental
destruction/pollution stricter, including serious jail time for execs
of firms who endanger air, earth or water for the sake of pure profit.

Education reform is also desperately needed, both for secondary education
and help with college. My daughter had a roommate who had to transfer out
of her college because she couldn't afford to stay. Of all the reasons to
drop out of college, that is the worst.

I also want to see independence restored immediately to public media such as PBS.
The independence of the media is fast becoming a thing of the past in the USA,
and this is the first step toward losing the country as we know it.

Lastly, I want a re-implementation of the absolute separation of Church and State.
Religious activists who want their views imposed upon the country need to be
put on a one-way plane to Saudi Arabia or Iran.

As for the Nazis, well, my parents-in-law lived under them. My father-in-law was
drafted off his farm near the Dutch border in 1942 at age 17 and sent to the Russian
front. He returned a year later, minus a leg and his ability to do the farm work
he loved. The actions of the Bushies remind me more of Stalin's way of doing things.
Maybe this is because so many people like Harris and Blackwell are out there,
altering election results to their liking and advantage. It was Stalin who said that
those who cast the votes decide nothing, whereas those who count the votes decide everything.

12. 125 posts about a girl wearing pants to her graduation
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 06:44 AM by theHandpuppet
189 posts on the Duke rape case, four threads about Ann Coulter, 15 threads about Zarqawi... all on the front page of GD, while other topics of importance drop like stones... well, you get the picture. When some folks here on DU start complaining (justifiably so) about BushCo and the media creating distractions from the real issues, I can only point to times like this on DU and say, "They do it because IT WORKS!"

There are now EIGHT Ann Coulter threads on the front page of GD. Wonder why she does what she does, folks? You just answered your own question.

Yep, that's what we need on the GD forum. Why discuss anything of substance? This forum is looking more and more like the Lounge every day.

21. you might think
that these minor issues are merely "distractions," but consider that social issues that attract attention often contain the cultural code--ie. they become a way to comprehend political events which can seem overwhelming and abstract to many. There's nothing wrong with using the personal stories of real people as a way into larger political issues.

SOCIAL CONTROL: Girl wearing pants to graduation--contains the larger issue of draconian, somewhat sexist rules imposed by 'authority.' How much conformity, social control will we allow? America has always been a place of tolerance, where 'tall poppies' are often left standing...in favor of freedom of expression. What are we teaching our children in this case? Important question

LAW: Duke rape case--contains all sorts of issues about how the justice system deals with criminal allegations today. This case in particular brings to mind the "Two Americas" referred to by John Edwards. Sexism, racism, classism--all are alive and well and impacting on us daily.

MEDIA: Ann Coulter--once again disgraces herself, her spectacular obscenities continually supported and promoted by the mainstream media. It's a shocker that she gets by with it and says a lot about the state of the media today. Important to disparage her as she is hell bent to viciously attack anyone we respect.

IRAQ: Zarqawi--allows for discussion of how the government has serially lied to us about Iraq, how killing an enemy leader will or will not change the course of the occupation and impact public opinion...highly relevant

23. The graduation thread is a good one.
It hits on a number of important issues: censorship, sexism, inept school administrators, school bullying...

It's important to focus on the criminal activities of the WH, sure, but we shouldn't lose our souls by forgetting the social issues. Given a number of the responses on that thread there are a number of people who could use a refresher on basic liberal values.

14. My top issues:
George Bush staged a coup in December of 2000, since then he has:

1) Looted the United States Treasury

2) Suspended fundamental civil rights

3) Stood by, and either as a result of incompetence, collusion, or both, allowed Americans to die by the thousands, on 9/11 and again when Hurricane Katrina hit.

4) Invaded another country on false premises and lies, againsst the will of most of the rest of the world and killed 10's of thousands of it's citizens, along with nearly 2,500 U.S. soldiers, not to mention the ones that are irreperably maimed and psychological harmed.

5) Rolled back environmental standards, probably contributing to the premature deaths of many thousands more Americans

6) Appointed two pro-business anti-civil liberty judges to the supreme court, who will affect our laws and liberty for many years to come

The list goes on.....
