Over One Hundred Thousand Dollars per SECOND
That is the amount the USA is currently spending over and above it's means. The GOP is responsible for the unsustainable reckless spending. We are paying interest on our debt of over a half million dollars a minute. How would you like that amount of money to be spent in your community for just an hour or so. The National Debt Clock is now virtually a blur. Under Clinton the Clock actually started to run backwards so they turned it off.
Check out the Clock. Wait ten seconds for it to load and scroll down just a little.

IMO this should be what every Democratic Candidate focus's upon.

1. I just can't watch the debt clock!
Seeing those numbers just turns my stomach! This needs to be in neon lights on Broadway and on billboards or other displays all across the nation. Maybe then people would start to realize that the "party of fiscal responsiblity" - ISN'T!!!!

2. Good and bad points to focusing on the debt
Good points - it is a real problem that hurts real people (When the Government hogs up the available credit in our society, there's less for people who need it a bit more). It puts us in the adult role in our national discourse.

Bad points - Republicans want to fix the deficit to, and there plans largely amount to let's trim government programs. Some programs probably could use a little trimming, but that's not what the Republicans want -they want a hack and slash approach.

3. I think they have hacked about all they can hack on social spending
The people will just not tolerate everything going to War. No matter anyway the out of control spending must be halted. This IMO is our most potent argument.Once we gain control we can spend money where it is needed and stay within our menas. The whole idea is to gain control and highlighting this complete recklessness is IMO our best chance of doing that. Even supposed "Patriots" who love war have a hard time justifying this totally out of control behavior.

4. "The People" will tolerate more War, forever.
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 10:44 AM by genie_weenie
because "The People" are called lobbyists. Politicians know and are reminded daily that it is the lobbyists who fund their campaigns and to whom they owe alleigance. Out of control spending will never stop and will only get worse because those in power view it as a "Bell which can not be Unrung".

As long as huge gobs of money can be made, weapons of war will be supplied. As long as the government can continue to steal money (taxes) and bodies (poor) it will have War.

edit: spelling

5. That is why this is such a potent issue.
Motivate the people for change..This is a good example of what to change from. War is so muddled. IMO not the best issue because minds are made up and locked in. GOP used to have a reputation (unearned IMO) of fiscal sanity. They need to be reminded of this at every opportunity.

7. But the question is how to effect that Change?
IMO, I no longer believe the change can come from within the system. The system has been corrupted and designed (perhaps intelligently) to ensure those who want change will not be able to effect it. But, I know what happens to those who attempt to stand up (outisde the system) to those who deem themselves our Betters and Rulers...

6. GOP - penny 'wise' and pound foolish
The GOP has no problem spending more on military than the rest of the world combined. The GOP has no problem spending more on prisons than any other nations. The GOP just doesn't fucking get it - "social" spending is CHEAPER than prisons and military! Making sure people are fed and educated keeps them out of prison. They want 'expensive'?? Just wait until the "huddled masses" start burning the GOP neighborhoods!!

9. $15,157 per second on "Defense".
That's just the "defense" budget itself. Not counting all the little add-ons like "Intelligence" and that little squabble in Iraq.
