Wendy’s Says Bye To Biggie
(snip)
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At Wendy's, it's bye-bye Biggie.

The burger chain has quietly phased out the "Biggie" name that it used for years on its large french fries and drinks. It's still serving up the bigger sizes, just calling them something else.

For example, a "medium" is the new name for the 5.6-ounce Biggie fries, and the 6.7-ounce Great Biggie is now the "large." A similar change has been made with drinks.

A Wendy's spokesman says research found the old labels confused some customers.

Restaurant analyst Dennis Lombardi says the renaming may also appease critics who've accused fast-food chains of encouraging obesity.

Wendy's is based in the Columbus suburb of Dublin.

Hmm. In terms of the obesity epidemic, it's like putting a Band-Aid on cancer, isn't it?

2. That is a pretty nice step.
Still, renaming their portions as "appeasement" to their critics, as the article implies, is kind of silly.

Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 11:20 AM by Botany
Although they no longer ask if you want to super size your order.

and they got rid of the trans-fats in their fries too. This not to be nice
but to make money ..... and I have no problem with that.

3. It's Not Wendy's Job To Cure It.
They can sell whatever the hell they want. It's up to the person to use discretion and responsibility in what they choose to purchase.

8. I don't disagree.
I just think it's odd that they would think that by renaming their portion sizes, that it would be a fix of some sort.

Basic sociology. The promote addictive and destructive food, they have a little social responsibility as well. I'm not a "Nanny State"er, but I'm just stating what I believe to be true here.

25. So Be It. But I Believe Otherwise.
They can promote whatever food they want. If you want to eat it, buy it. If you don't want to, then don't.

I'm sick of all the friggin people taking away the high calorie foods and replacing everything with tasteless low calorie crap or diet crap. Now they want to take away my last source of good ole high calorie food, the fast food joint.

It ain't up to wendy's or burger king to control your calorie intake or exercises regimen. They can sell and market whatever they want in my opinion, including the krispy kreme cheeseburger.

28. OK, just take away the addictive chemicals and PR blitzes aimed at childre
Corporations like Wendys are not about giving you a choice; that's not how they operate. It's not a matter of "if you want to eat it, buy it. If you don't want to, then don't." The Public Relations industry has made sure to keep the world not working that way.

29. I Always Find Statements Like That To Be Extreme.
Always blame everybody else kinda mentality. They're allowed to market, and they are allowed to market to children, since they do eat food. But everything is ok in moderation. Now if you give your kid wendy's 3 meals a day well then there's probably gonna be a problem. One night a week? Probably not so much.

And furthermore, last I checked they did offer salads and other non greasy items, and I did not find anyone outside the parking lot flagging in cars with an ak-47 saying eat here or die.

And yes, it is a matter of if you want to eat it, buy it, if you don't, then don't. There is nothing wrong with Wendy's or the others selling whatever the hell they want as unhealthy as they want it to be. It only becomes wrong when they force you and your children to eat it or risk starvation. But methinks that really isn't the case.

30. It's not "blame everybody else" it's "take a realistic look at society"
And look at the social factors that come together to create these things.

I know a great place for you to start with this: read Fast Food Nation, then see the movie:

http://www.fastfoodnation-movie.com/trailer.php

When it comes out in the fall.

Oh, and take some sociology classes or read some books in it. I'm not nixing personal liberties OR responsiblity, I'm just looking FAIRLY at society's role in producing this behavior, and that of the mega-social actors called the corporations.

4. Ah Semantics!
I ordered a small drink once and was told they didn't have "small" only medium and large. I said if you only have two sizes that there could not be a "medium" since medium means middle between two extremes. you can have small and large, big and bigger but not medium. I got a look like "WTF"

6. That's part of the reason why they are changing the names as well.
What was it, medium, Biggie and Great Biggie? A little puzzling if you don't eat there often.

However, my staff is advising me against adding "Shitload" sized popcorn and "Big-Ass" Coke.

It certainly sounds like a better deal than the "large." And who could argue with the logic of a Big-Ass Coke?

12. I hit the same problem at my local pizza place.
It was a pizza joint: non-corporate, it had recently changed ownership, had a facelift, menu "upgrades" etc.

I called in to order our usual medium mushroom & sausage pizza, and was told that my choices were large or extra-large.

Like you, when I tried to argue the semantics, I was given the WTF look.

We don't eat there any more.

10. I actually prefer the "Butt-Load" size. As in, "May I have a "butt-load"
of tasty french fries?" No ambiguity as to what you mean, you'd like a large number of french fries.

16. Pesky critics! Wendy's renames the fries but doesn't change fat content
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 11:43 AM by jean
Wendy's would do the public a favor by renaming their fries with numbers: 14, 21, 24 and 28.

http://www.wendys.com/food/Nutrition.jsp

Kid's meal 14.0
Small 21.0
Medium 24.0
Large 28.0

edit: oops, the numbers are fat grams

I know plenty of people seem dim, but this is ridiculous.

I was hoping it'd have been dropped because of them making amends for their fatty artery-clogging greasy pimple slop -- of which Dave Thomas surely ate too much of because somebody was audacious enough to let the world know his stats after he snuffed it... oops...

31. Except it doesn't work
Now their "Medium" size is the same as the "Biggie" was, and the large is even bigger. This change will only encourage people to get larger sizes, since I suspect more people would be inclined to order a "Medium" size over a "Biggie". This is pure marketing bullshit, and any critic will recognize exactly what this move is meant to do.
