Article:
(AP) WASHINGTON Rejecting an argument being made by some conservatives in his own party, President Bush said Thursday that the idea that the United States could force millions of illegal immigrants to return home "ain't gonna work."
Bush told a gathering of Hispanic leaders that the immigration system is broken and Congress needs to pass "commonsense" reform that strengthens the border while allowing more foreigners in to work temporarily and giving those who sneaked in years ago a chance to become citizens. (more at link)
Now for the responses -- page one! ________________________________________
how about thousands? would that work? ________________________________________ How would you know, Bush? You sure as heck haven't tried. ________________________________________ No need to deport them. Fine and jail the employers, the jobs dry up and they will find their own way home. ________________________________________ Old Chinese saying : The journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step. Get deporting in force and for real, Mr President. You are not even trying. ________________________________________ That's a rather silly remark. No one is saying deportation would occur all at once - for one thing, no one knows where all the illegals are. It would be a lengthy process, but it's necessary in order to preserve the rule of law. ________________________________________ If that is the case and since laws are on the books that are being violated then he should resign and let us see if Dick Cheney can enforce the laws on the books OR he shoulod go before Congerss and request repeal of the laws and propose some that can be enforced ________________________________________ How about even hundreds? Would that work? If they at least start and go about deporting whatever they can that might influence at least some illegals to consider returning home. ________________________________________ There are PLENTY of ways to encourage illegals to self-deport. Cutting off public benefits to them, and clamping down on employers, would be a good start. ________________________________________ Never thought I'd say this, but .... Mr. Bush.... scroo yoo! ________________________________________ Punish employers. $1,000 per day per illegal. ________________________________________ Starting another round of Amnesty "aint gonna wotk either" ________________________________________ On this issue President Bush wouldn't know common sense if it walked up and bit him on the ass. ________________________________________ Gotta love a government that sits by and watches a problem grow to the size where they then feel the only appropriate response is to throw their hands up in the air. ________________________________________ Deportation would work if our government would grab its balls. But pandering to Hispanic voters and communities lends to lead one down the path Bush has gone. To bad he's become wishy washy in a near Kerryesque fashion at the end of his political road. Like many before him, right at the end he screws it up. ________________________________________ "How would you know, Bush? You sure as heck haven't tried."
No he hasn't. Just last night there some DA on Fox News, who was forced to let the illegal aliens he'd arrested go free, because when he called the INS, they were not interested in coming to take these suckers. So much for President Bush's speech in which he claimed that "arrest and let go" has been stopped. ________________________________________ Bush told a gathering of Hispanic leaders that the immigration system is broken... Well...duh! Who is responsible for the breakdown? I think we all know the answer. ________________________________________ You don't have to deport anyone. $10k fine for each illegal worker. I bet these companies would move real quick to find Americans willing to do the jobs Americans won't do. ________________________________________ ABSOLUTELY! I venture to say that probably 3/4 of the entitlement dollars spent are directly benefitting illegals! I know from personal experience as a welfare worker that this is accurate, at least in Texas. ________________________________________ by $10k fine, I mean $10k fine for the employer. ________________________________________ "President Bush said Thursday that the idea that the United States could force millions of illegal immigrants to return home "ain't gonna work"
I wonder how the President feels about those who have this defeatist attitude about the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and the WOT? ________________________________________ He is just wrong. ________________________________________ How would you know, Bush? He knows because he is uniquely postioned to issue what is known as a self-fulfilling prophesy. The idea of forcing illegals home "ain't gonna work" because he prevents members of the Executive Branch from doing things that are in their job descriptions which would, if actually done, have the effect of forcing illegals to go home. Intellectual dishonesty at its best. ________________________________________ Bush invites more illegals to cross with another idiotic comment ________________________________________ Mexico managed to get millions to leave the country without resorting to deportations. ________________________________________ Let's turn this around and ask how could we force millions of illegals INTO the United States. All these experts and pundits would tell you how stupid that was, how you could never charter the 300,000 buses (for 12 million illegals) required to bring them here, blah, blah, blah. And yet they are here. Well, it works the same way in reverse. Remove the attraction for coming by cracking down on today's slavetraders, the hiring companies, and eventually most would find a way to get back home. They sure as h*ll didn't come here to join the Marines or help us in the War on Terror. ________________________________________ TRUE... String up the employers, property managers that rent to them, and Real Estate Brokers that sell to them.. AND THEY WILL DEPORT THEMSELVES Duuuugh.. George SLAP SLAP... wake up.. ________________________________________ Then why did you bother deporting 6 million of them and at what cost to the taxpayers?
I would say that the man needs to be confronted with these kind of questions, but IMO, he isn't just playing stupid, he knows exactly what he's doing and, instead, playing the less informed for fools in order to pass his agenda. ________________________________________ We've been through this before. You cannot blame the INS for not being able to hold illegal aliens while they await deportation hearings. There is no place to put them. The US prison system IN TOTAL holds 3 million people. There are 12 million illegal aliens.
There is no money for a tent concentration camp in which to put illegals, and no community has volunteered to have such things within its confines. Picking a desert locale requires sanitation, water and power infrastructure that does not exist.
The current procedure of giving them their hearing date is not bad. If they do not show up, then the next time they are caught they are guilty of much more than merely walking across the border without a visa and then they can be held somewhere awaiting not a deportation hearing, but a trial for contempt -- which will occur far faster. Deportation will be the result of that.
So this is not a catch and release situation. It's a two strikes and you're out situation -- and that's not a bad configuration.
The way to solve this is a sealed border, employer sanctions and time. As time passes and they go home to their parents' funeral, they can't get back in. Self deportation does work. Given the demographics of the US, some guest worker program probably does make sense too, but the only applicants for it that should be accepted are those applications filed in person outside the US. ________________________________________ You can't deport even one illegal alien. It won't work. ________________________________________ You are right. I have often wondered if the mexican federales had some pictures of Bush doing inappropriate things as a young man, and that is why he is selling us down the river. Currently, I'm so angry with this president over the immigration issue, I'm having difficulty seeing past it. ________________________________________ We deport people every day. What Bush meant to say was, "I don't WANT to deport Mexicans because then my good friend, Vicente Fox, will be mad at me." ________________________________________ Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Maricopa Cty AZ) set up tents for 10,000 in short order, and said he'll set up tents for more if needed.
Look, we put 500,000 troops in tent cities around Kuwait in the few months buildup for the Gulf War. If it was good enough for our troops, it's good enough for a bunch of lawbreakers. ________________________________________ And asset forfeiture. More illegals have purchased houses in California than you would believe.
The government has no problem using this tool against tax cheats, but somehow it just isn't available to help deter illegal immigration. ________________________________________ President Bush is, of course, correct that enforcing the laws already on the books "ain't gonna work"......
As long as he and his cronies refuse to enforce the laws as they are constitutionally mandated to do, it surely is not going to work.
Tancredo/Heyworth 2008 ________________________________________ How do you know if something doesn't work unless you try? ________________________________________ So just saying "it ain't gonna work" settles the matter, huh? And in the next sentence he tells us that this massive, unprecedented administrative bureaucracy can and will be created to bring illegals into compliance with laws that haven't (and, hopefully, won't be) passed. That task is about a hundred times more impossible than deportation. Sorry, I ain't that stupid. ________________________________________ "Gee, I dunno guys. There's only 3 million of us, give or take. They've got the best army in the world and a navy from hell. Screw this . . . " John Hancock, just before tearing up the Declaration of Independence in a parallel RINO universe. ________________________________________ Thats right; Shut down remittances or require verifiable id the send them and they will self deport. ________________________________________ "ain't gonna work."
That's a rather defeatist approach................
What would a real leader do? ________________________________________ So much for a "can do" attitude. I am so disappointed in Bush. This was one of his worst speeches. ________________________________________ I don't understand why he is taking the position of "We won't do it because it can't be done"
This is the same man who is trying to eliminate world terrorism.
What's easier...stopping a worldwide invasion by 1 billion Muslims or send 12 million illegals back home? ________________________________________ Bush said himself that we "deported" 6 million. To support 12 million you do the same thing as you did to deport 6 million for twice the amount of time. ________________________________________ Maybe we should appeal to the real President -- Vicente Fox -I'm sure he could make it work(sarcasm) ________________________________________ So sorry I voted for the boy!!!!!!!! ________________________________________ Better than a fine have the employers assume FULL financial responsibility for these border jumpers and their families. Can you imagine the cost of housing, social benefits, school, jail and legal cost, auto insurance, healthcare insurance just as starters. Employers would be chartering buses to get those folks to the border. ________________________________________ How do the illegals "self-deport" after we build the wall and seal the border?
