snip - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressional Republicans killed a provision in an Iraq war funding bill that would have put the United States on record against the permanent basing of U.S. military facilities in that country, a lawmaker and congressional aides said on Friday.
The Bush administration has said it does not want to place any artificial timelines on a U.S. presence in Iraq and that it wants to begin withdrawing troops when Iraqi security forces are better able to protect the country. But it has not ruled out permanent bases in Iraq.

I'll tell you why I am a cynic. It all goes back to oil. Not necessarily access - just creating a volitile market which drives up prices and keeps them there. The plan is working beautifully - the oil companies are swimming in record profits while America bleeds, Iraq suffers, and people die.
They don't want peace. Peace infringes on profit. And as long as American troops are there - there will be attacks and a continued insurgency.
Tell me I'm wrong. Please explain it in a way I can digest, understand and accept.
