DU, monitors! Stop Google ad for Nicaraguan coffee grown by CONTRAS!
Ads for Republican candidate Tom McClintock, and ads for US Military Picture Frames, Military Dating Forum, Military Gear, Military Flags, and Special Ops Training ("high risk protection training in dangerous places: iraq-Afghanistan") are bad enough...

But this is utterly outrageous:

"Nicaraguan Contra Coffee
Grown by former Contra Soldiers.
Wake up with freedom fighters!"

This is the ad that greeted me at the thread by Northern Sun, entitled, "Daniel Ortega says US aims to block return" (Note: Ortega, the popular leader of the Nicaraguan revolution, is running for president.)

The "Contras" were the US-funded death squads who slaughtered liberal school teachers and mayors and turned the essentially peaceful Nicaraguan Revolution into a bloodbath. The "Contras" were some of the most heinous killers in Central America. And we have to put up with their ads for coffee? "Freedom fighters"? That is a damned lie! They weren't "freedom fighters"! They were paid by the Reagan regime to kill Leftists! --in an illegal US war expressly forbidden by Congress, with the money to pay for these death squads coming from illicit arms sales to IRAN!

DU, Monitors, please, please, PLEASE stop these rightwing ads pushing militarism and death!!!*

-----------------------------

*Here's the url where the "Contra" ad appeared. I just cut and pasted this url into a separate window, to see if the ad remained, and mysteriously the "Contra" ad vanished. So maybe you ARE monitoring them. If not--if the disappearance of this ad is just due to some other function of Google's "key word" search program (which seems to be keying off content of the thread, and placing what the program thinks are relevant ads on that page)--then start now. You are going to lose DUers if you permit ads like this. They are an insult to us and to the people our government has killed, or is killing, all over the world.

1. If they were 15 in 1985, they would be 36 now.

2. Wow...I checked out the Contra Cafe website...
They even make a t-shirt that says, "Fair Trade is for Liberals. Drink Contra Coffee." Yep, us liberals and our desire to have a living wage for people. :eyes:

I'm sure they really hate me. I drink Cafe Habitat Wicked Women's Roast at home. Cafe Habitat is fair trade, organic, and the beans are roasted by a co-op of homeless people (to give them jobs). You can't get more liberal than that.

3. Why don't you turn the ads off?
I believe we can do that now.

5. I don't mind DU getting money from ads run on top and bottom of page,
and they don't get money if we block them. But offensive ads like this are sickening! DU shouldn't be supporting--or should be supported by--death squads!!!

6. I don't think it'll make a dent in DU's revenue if you block them.
I'm speaking of you personally, just to make it clear.

...please send an email directly to the admins. We don't read every thread on the website, so you are more likely to get our attention by contacting us directly. Our contact info is here:

Make sure you include the URL that the ad leads to, so we know what to block.

We do not pre-approve any of the ads; they are served-up automatically by Google. We can block them after the fact but it usually takes a few hours to go into effect.

I have blocked the ad.
