456 New Users since the other day...
Not insignificant...

A few days ago, I noticed that there were exactly 90000 members at DU, and posted to that effect. Since that day, we have 456 new members and that is a fair percentage of the total. One-half of one percent to be 'roughly exact', as my physics professor used to say.

This means that either we are in the process of becoming known as THE place for truth, Justice, and the American Way, or there are lots of skulking low-life FReepers planning to undermine us...

I prefer to think it's the former of course.

1. both, I think... as we grow
the more trolls there will be, and the more sophisticated their trolling methodology.

That physics, too. :-)

2. Just yesterday, Rush was reading from DU
I happened upon his show yesterday for a few minutes and he was claiming that the lefties were in tears over Al Zarqawi killing and started reading from one of the threads. Since many different types of people listen to his show because of no other choice, maybe he directed some DU like minded people here. He must have repeated DemocraticUnderground.com at least 10 times.

Welcome newbies.

4. This is good news...
Once they start quoting you, you begin to become part of the lexicon, you begin to have some sway in thinking, even among your political enemies. This means that with more exposure, we will soon be revered as the dead-on site that we are. We've crossed the Rubicon of Rush and we are on our way to victory for the oppresed masses. Onwardds and Upwards...or as they say in Craniofacial Growth and Development: Downward and Forward..

Don't ask...it's a dental thing...we're all a little nuts you know.

5. How many stick
As much as the numbers appear grand, so many accounts are dormant
have have not logged in for a longish time. So many as well, are banned,
for whatever reason, and the numbers skinner doesn't share with us, show
how many actual read-hits there are, from how many IP's, and how many
are the same from before.

Its a stubtle deception, those numbers, using statistics to mislead
slightly about the actual membership, in the advantage of the website
to make it look as popular as possible... no harm done, more power to
them... just we spend a lot of time cutting through bull to the
truth, just to believe our own bull.

6. Absolutely correct...
we know that there are actually reasonably few active posters, in comparison to the lofty 90000+ mark, despite all the gabble degook. The fact that they can get 1200 donations very quickly means that there are a fair number at least reading this stuff. In DC, I am told that one letter to a Congressperson implies that 5000 feel the same way.

i was well aware of that fact when I noted the number the other day. My only point is that that's till a fair number for whatever reason to look at a site at least a few times, and, IMO, we've been reasonably influential. I really think so.

there are many like-minded people out there and Lord knows how many folks have linked to us over the years, both thru e-mails which one of us may have sent to buddies, or thru the mass mailings which crop up once in a while.

9. Yes, and you can't "unhear" or "unread" something
Sometimes the chaotic effect of a post that only 4 people read is that
their subsequent posts reflect a knock on effect, that we are like a
nuclear reactor chamber, you never know what neutron is gonna blow
up what other neutron to make light.

1:5000 feels about right. If we were to consider the world's
population, it might be more like 1:500,000

11. Probably because of the press DU got because of the Zarqawi
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 10:15 AM by Kahuna
posts. That is the kind of attention we don't need. No doubt people stopped by to see the "Zarqawi supporters" for themselves.

12. That means about 200 more posters? Can we have a forum for Ann
Coulter, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity and kin? They are taking up a lot of space and time. They are fun to poke at, but always predictable. Most of all, they are not front screen newsworthy, because of their predictability and borishness. (Though Annie did strike lower than usual this week).

If we combined them with Falwell, Robertson, Phelps - we could call it the 3r forum for Ridiculous Religious Rightwads or RRRightwings. Or we could call them the HufferPuffers. Of something less nice.

I would really prefer not to have them get in the way of trying to use less and less time to cover the better stuff. Why highlight them?

This is my request.

13. Okay, for our legitimate new members
Welcome to DU, may the addiction begin. For all of you who didn't come for enlightenment, may you learn that there is indeed a different world than the one your masters have told you exists.
If you're not too far gone stick around and learn.
