2. Its Far Worse Than Those Choices
It is a lack of education, it is a lack of intellectual curiosity, it is bad viewing habits.

It is a misnamed "nation of sheep'. What we really are is a nation of milkcows. Born and bread to spend and consume, amassing nothing. Ashes to ashes, replacements in line as far as the eye can see ....

11. "Born and bred"
This is something too many people ignore. Especially for the youngest among us, Americans have been socialized via the media to believe that rampant, wasteful consumerism is the path to happiness. Couple this with the free-market propaganda, complete with bootstraps and ideas around the nobility of work for the sake of work, and you have set up the perfect storm. Americans are prepped from the time of birth to become working class debt-slaves; minions of consumers armed with credit cards that enable them to buy garbage that they can't afford (falling wages and benefits that go hand in hand with a 'free market') which in turn enslaves them to that debt. The mass media bolsters these ideas by making television shows and films that brainwash them into believing that everyone in this country is a white collar professional (or alternately, involved in heroic law enforcement), who lives in a McMansion with new cars and cell phones.

And we waste away our lives in pursuit of the myth.

I'd say those who believe Bush's lies (or pretend to) are a certain type of people. The poll assumes everyone believes Bush's lies regardless of who they are. ;)

If a preacher or rabbi or priest or authority figure in a uniform says it on the all powerful tee vee, it must be true right? Why would our own government deliberately lie?

They seem brainwashed, but brain dead might be a better term. They are taught to respect politicians of their party and that they are acting in their best interest. politicians wouldn't lie, would they? At some point it might hit them that this is exactly what they are doing.

9. For decades their minds have been shaped in a such a way
to be perfectly accepting of the propaganda and lies that are now coming their way. If you tell someone relentlessly that they live in the best country on earth, that their way of life is morally superior, that the actions of their government are democratic and always in the people's interests, it has an effect. So even though most people are capable of cynicism about what they are hearing from the government and the media (many will say things like 'all politicans are crooks!' and 'the media can't be trusted!') they still behave as though those things weren't true.

12. They believe all of the lies they hear in the history books and..
and all of the garbage we have all heard in the past about presidents and how we are suppose to look up to them. The problem is that republicons and former dems alike and their ministers pick the dumbest non-president puppet to follow. His lies are so easy to see and they really believe that he is protecting them.

Every since 911 I have been saying why do they believe that he is protecting them when the borders are open and as we all travel in this country we see all kinds of ways that a terrorist can create havoc. Some also have grown up looking at the old John wayne movies and other movies about the military and they really believe that they are better than every other country and that they fail to look at the fact that a lot of americans come from those countries and the people in those countries can see what goes on in this country and they know that this country is a bunch of hypocritical phoneys.

Both statements above are signs of much need new blood. Welcome!

The very idea that we should not question everything bushco does is absurd. They require more scrutiny, not less.

"If you don't have something bad to say about bushco, don't say anything at all" would be more helpful, eh?

18. Other: Because they WANT to.
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 10:58 AM by TahitiNut
It's basic human nature. We tend to believe what we WANT to believe and we'll do "evidence collection" to shore up our false beliefs.

We only need notice how depressed people feed their/our depression. No matter what the weather or what someone says or does, there's a way to 'spin' it in a negative way. Nice weather? Well, that won't last long - the grass needs water - sunburn - etc. "Evidence collection" is the shift in perception wee're all capable of doing. The 'formative years' (0-2) are largely spent learning how to select from the plethora of sights, sounds, smells, and feels that bombard us constantly, filtering out from our conscious attention that which isn't relevant to our (forming) interests (food, etc.). Our "filters" are used constantly - and can be easily adapted to serve our biases.

We believe what we want to believe. We're experts at it. Propagandists and con artists and marketeers make this their profession.

I do think some people do want to believe. Even though it is going against their better judgment.

I am sure I do it at times myself.

19. They've had lobotomies
Not the physical hole drilled in their heads, but psychological lobotomies. Brainwashing. Mind control. This administration and their drones in Congress have made their lives so difficult, that Americans are struggling so hard just to get by, distracted by their efforts just to survive, they can't pay the close attention they need to.

This administration feeds them lie after lie, each filled with false hope. "Zarqawi's death is a blow to Al Qaeda." "The economy is strong and robust." Etc, etc, etc. The people grasp on to everything they say. Problem for republicans is, despite everything they say, things are NOT getting better for Americans. Americans are beginning to wake up, and this leaves the republicans more desperate than ever to hold on to their control.

The problem for us is that there's still so much hatred being spewed. Republicans feed people's fear when they can't feed their hopes. Thus we have the Coulters and the Limbaughs and the Hannitys and the O'Reilleys, all spewing division and hate with each thing they say.

America is so polarized, many have given up altogether. They may be awakening, and they want change, however, they're divided and polarized, hating the Democrats as much as the Republicans, thanks to the so-called "liberal" media allowing all the hate talk against liberals and Democrats. See, the Republicans have earned the hatred Americans have for them. The hatred towards Democrats is media brainwash. And many people aren't able to recognize that just yet.

It's truly disgusting that the media continues to throw these hatemongers at us. Nonstop. It's all we hear when we turn on CNN or FOX or MSNBC (with the exception of KO). It's disgusting that these hatemongers are invited to spread their vileness to millions and millions of Americans. "Liberals hate America." "Liberals hate God." "Liberals will destroy your family and all your values." Never could I have imagined that such hatred could be spread by our own people, about our own people - Americans against Americans.

Yes, it's true that everyone has the right to free speech, and they're entitled to say what they think. But what about responsibility? What about caring for this country? What if these hatemongers could take one moment and think about the fact that the evil they spew from their mouths is dividing this country and destroying the Christian values they insist only they have?

You will never hear a liberal talking hate about their fellow Americans the way these hatemongers do. Perhaps that means that liberals are not so godless after all. Perhaps that means that liberals might actually be better Christians than Ms. Coulter or Mr. Robertson or Mr. Bush. Wake up, America - see the hatred for what it is - a desperate attempt to keep you distracted and afraid of your own people - for the sole purpose of the powerful and greedy and rich to attain more power and money AT YOUR EXPENSE.

It's essential at this time for Democrats to spread a message of hope. A message that tells Americans that WE THE PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THINGS IN AMERICA. We need someone to represent us, who can unify this country and dispel the fear and hatred that the republicans are spewing. A non-polarizing leader to stand up and speak for us. Someone who's got this country's best interests at heart, and not their own political ambitions. This nation needs to unite and heal.

A strong America begins with a united America. And a nation is strong when the government invests in its people. And that starts when the hatred and bigotry and division and hypocrisy stops.

22. He's repeating the lies that they've always preferred to believe
rather than face a universe of problems without easy solutions.
By lies I don't mean any particular, specific information from Bush or his people which turns out to be false, but larger stories--mythologies about America, and Right'n'Wrong--stories which Bush retails, acts out and even appears to personally embody.
His backwash supporters desperately cling to these stories as life-preservers keeping them afloat in a sea of foreign dangers and moral anarchy--with faith in Bush as the central part, standing for the whole mythological cosmos that surrounds him. Since what they need to believe is the mythological order that Bush stands for, believing any little specific misinformation that he emits is an easy feat for them no matter how false it is by popular majorities or majorities of experts. They only believe it, or say they do, to support and renew their faith in narratives that aren't supposed to be subjected to reason in the first place. If your goal is to escape reason in general, to have "reasons" (justification & authority) for doing things which don't stand on any explanation, and don't need to, which will neither be preceeded or be followed by an explanation, what the hell do you really care if your supporting facts are really true or not? When testable facts enter into the apologetics of ur-Conservatives at all, it is purely as a dodge- a grudging concession to the armtwisting of antagonists who believe goals and methods ought to be examined constantly and critically.
The perfect Conservative argument-closer (if they had their way and could remold the world to their fancy) would always run like so: ...because God SAID SO, as the Bible (or any other sacred scripture of your choice) tells us, and because we've always obeyed this divine law heretofore ensuring our survival to this day, and because the King (God's representative) now commands it. Every "issue of the day" would be settled in this fashion, at least as far as the law goes, without a rational moment or question for centuries on end. A Dark Age, is the historian's name for it.

life these days. Most folks are working so hard and so busy they have to shut out reflective thinking just to keep going.

In other times what the King or Ruler told people was considered the truth until things got so bad that the people couldn't shield it from minds anymore.

Repugs and our own "King" control the Media ....so these days the Media is the King who tells the people what to think until they can't believe their "lying eyes" anymore. :-(

I will always remember Tweety glorifying the King/Emperor's "codpiece" and beltbuckle. Folks wanted to believe that because they were afraid and needed to believe that the "coward" who flew around the country to safe bases on 9/11 was really their great Savior.... ugh.

34. I agree KoKo, critical thinking has taken a major hit
here in the good old U.S.A. I believe there is a purposeful campaign by the powers that be, to dumb the American People down. You could take professional wrestlers and put them behind our millionaire pundit's news desks and they would not miss a beat. I believe the quality of information or lack thereof would be unnoticeable.
