A nitpicky question.
I've seen a large number of posters on DU use the word "moran" to describe the kind of congenitally idiotic, braindead person who, for example, runs our country. I've always believed the word was spelled "moron" and just assumed that the writers had made a typo. Now, however, I'm seeing "moran" turn up in so many places that I'm wondering if its an accepted alternative or regional spelling of "moron". I've looked it up in a few online dictionaries, but they all agree on the "moron" spelling (with "Moran" simply referring to towns of that name scattered around the US.

Does anyone know what the story is with "moran"? Are we seeing the emergence of a new word?

4. Someone will post the picture of the "moran"
It's based on a freeper poster - another one of those publically displayed posters where the idiot could not even bother to spell their poster correctly.

FWIW, it'd probably be nice if folks checked out the DU Glossary before asking a FAQ.

(Next, someone will ask "Who's 'Tweety' and why do you call him that?")

12. OK, I have been here a while and still am not sure if Tweety is
Matthews or Russert. I still don't know what IIRC means and I even went to FAQ's to find out the other night, so is there a glossary and where do I find it?

IIRC = If I Recall Correctly

The glossary is in the link above that you responded to already. :hi:

Thank you so much, but I wish that there really was a DU glossary
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 02:03 PM by I_Make_Mistakes
because some of us don't want to look stupider by asking what things mean, so we just ignore those references and lose some meaning in the post by doing so!

Edit: Sorry for not getting the thread correctly, I just bookmarked it and will now have a field day translating all the references! Thanks again.

23. Which may not help all that much in some cases.
Since 'moran' is, as far as I can see, a fairly DU-specific 'inside joke,' a Google search is not particularly illuminating. Admittedly, I didn't think of looking at image.google.com, because I had no idea the joke related to a photograph. Even if I had, I probably would have thought that the people misspelling the word on DU had made the same spelling mistake as the person in the photo. It's a pretty big leap, in the absence of other evidence, to assume that the two are connected.

I was remiss in not consulting the DU Glossary but its hardly conspicuous, buried as it is within the 'Research Forum,' so I had no idea it was there. Perhaps it would be more useful if a 'Glossary' button was included in the DU toolbar at the top of the page.

20. Look here ...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=358

See where it says "DU Glossary"on the right? Click it.

If you then click on the "I" you'll see the entry "IIRC - If I Remember Correctly" listed.
Same thing for many other terms.

DUers are free to update the Glossary and add those terms subject to the most FAQs.
