Pete Seeger just turned 87 on May 3rd.
I know alot of younger DUers proably wouldn't know Pete Seeger (I'm 27. . .I've listened to his music for years) or the work he's done to advance environmentalism, civil rights, the women's movement and every significant social cause since the 1940s.

Pete Seeger is a real American Treasure, and living about 50 miles from me on the western side of the Newburgh-Beacon bridge in Beacon, NY. He started a Hudson River revitalization project in the 1990s.

Pete Seeger cannot sing much anymore. His voice is almost totally gone. So, DUers, I just need to ask: What of his music do you feel was the most inspirational? And, what do you think Mr. Seeger would sing about in today's Bushland?

To me, it was the song San Francisco Bay, that I listened to on one of my grandmother's LPs when I was 6. I started asking my parents how people could allow the Bay to become a craphole? It was that song that started my environmentalism. I remember the day it happened (July 17th, 1985).

My family raised me on a higher order of thinking. . .I was trying to solve complex world problems in 2nd grade (well, I was in 2nd grade when I heard the song).

When Pete Seeger finally leaves us, the United States will lose one of the truest, most active members of the artist community over the past 50 years.

G-d Bless Pete Seeger. May he live to 100 and even more so.

3. I've got it. And I enjoyed it. But he's no Pete Seeger.
I've been a Seeger fan since the 40s, when a few Weavers songs actually made the "hit parade"--Tzena Tzena and Good Night, Irene. Springsteen strikes me as more of a shouter than a singer, but I did like the DVD that accompanied the CD.

6. The Weavers 1963 Carnegie Hall Reunion concert is a spectacular recording
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 09:31 PM by Elwood P Dowd
I first heard it in the late-60s. It is now a hot item with the high end audio people, and there is even a special $50.00 collectible LP edition that has been remastered and cut at 45 rpm on 200 gram vinyl.

14. Live studio performances
I bought the twin pack which has the CD and DVD in one crystal case. I think you can also buy just the CD. I liked the DVD because it comes over as a live session music - wicked stuff !

In the same way if you buy the current re-release of the Highwaymen - Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris - you get a DVD with that as well which shows them in the studio makiomng the tracks and sorting out which ones to do.

5. I love the new Springsteen CD
I appreciate what Mr. Seeger did years and years ago and love many of his songs.

I did, however, not enjoy the experience I had in 1985 when I saw him live with Arlo Guthrie. Gone was any recognition of what the very songs he had written meant. There was no anger or passion, just a catchy sing along for a very yuppie crowd. Can you blame a singer for his crowd? Yeah, you can blame him for how he packages his tour and the venues he/his rep selects. I love his songs and I love the passion he sang them with in the past but that experience has colored my memory of Pete for the last few decades.

May he live long and comfortably and am glad that Bruce was able to help at least me recall what was worth being excited about.

13. Thanks for that.
Meaningful lyrics.

I've never been too impressed with the ultra simple way he plays a 5 string but on that track it sure does work well. Thanks again

15. I never liked his singing too much
but that don't alter the fact he has always had my respect as did Woody. Yes - he is, and Woody was, a true patriot. :patriot:

Now check out Kris Kristofferson's latest CD - This Old Road. Find it on Amazon and then listen to the track named "In The News" which is 100% anti your current situation. Best protest song for years that one.

10. Mr. Seeger lives on the East side of the Newburgh-Beacon bridge....
But he does make his way across the river once in awhile. Just last year he was here to dedicate yet another MLK Blvd. and sang "We Shall Overcome". It's always a treat to see him around. He made his home in Beacon early in his life and has stayed in spite of all the changes that have occured in the area. As different as Springsteen has interpreted his songs, he's given him more deserved attention to his music and hopefully his causes...
