Say it loud - say it often. Voting Machines Don't Work!
As in, they literally don't work! They are not safe, they are not secure, they are not verifiable, they are not immune to human machinations or simple mechanical breakdowns. It is INSANE that we as a nation have entrusted the future of the the Free World to such a piece of electronic crap. Why don't they print a receipt like every ATM in the world? Do they have warranties? What guarantees do the companies actually make as to their security or hackability? Why do we place our elections in the hands of private enterprise who may have their own agendas? As a democracy are we terminally stupid?

1. Amen!
I guess you're as pissed off about this not being issue #1, as I am. Every chance I've had to make this connection somehow to any post I've replied to is what I've been doing. If this doesn't get fixed, then all else is moot. Where in hell are the Dems on this???

3. I've been voting on optical scan
machines for more years than I can remember. I've never had a problem. No problems have ever been seen in my state ( all precincts in Oklahoma vote on the exact same machines). On the few times a recount has been ordered, for example Clark vs Edwards, the machines were extremely accurate.

Humans cause more problems than machines.

As long as I'm at it, machines will never give way to nineteenth century paper and hand counts.
Cars, computers, and electricity are here to stay and so are machines for voting.

4. You've never had a problem THAT YOU'RE AWARE OF.
As far as optical scans - how about all those studies done all the time about the inaccuracies of optical scans in super markets, that strangely enough, always, seem to go against the consumer. In voting, you don't even have a receipt to check. Would you accept that at the supermarket? "Just trust us - you owe $87.92.You don't need no stinking receipt!" Only you do, and you insist on it. Why wouldn't you expect your polling place to be as accountable as your supermarket?

5. With that setup, you have VVPB - Voter Verified Paper Ballots for
ues in recounts.

With totally electronic machines, no Voter Verified Paper Ballot, you cannot trust what the machine says is the total.

Simple.

Machines are great for doing a quick tally, but if there's a question about results (and to do random audits which should be mandatory) you have to check the verified hard copy that shows what the voter intended. That's all. Absent a paper record, the whole thing is suspect. It may be accurate or it may be inaccurate. There's no way to know.
