Iraqi says U.S. troops beat dying al-Zarqawi
Sun, June 11, 2006
By AP

BAGHDAD -- U.S. officials have altered their account of the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, saying he was alive and partly conscious after bombs destroyed his hideout, and an Iraqi witness has raised the possibility that the wounded "al-Qaida in Iraq" leader was beaten by U.S. troops before he died.

The witness, who lived near the scene of the bombing, claimed to have seen U.S. soldiers beating an injured person who resembled al-Zarqawi until blood flowed from the man's nose.

Asked about the allegations, U.S. military representative Maj.-Gen. William Caldwell said he'd check. In Washington, Pentagon official Jeffrey Gordon said yesterday he was unaware of the claim.

The Iraqi, identified only as Mohammed, said residents put the man in an ambulance before U.S. forces arrived. The soldiers pulled the man from the ambulance and beat him, he said...

1. He probably tried to get away, and he got a rifle butt to the face
They wanted him dead...not on trial..

4. Oh, it's beaten by *US* troops now?
Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 02:12 AM by Kagemusha
Sorry, first time around I didn't properly see that... because I'd already heard it was *Iraqi* troops that beat him to death. I don't understand it either way. I feel like this is just bad eyewitness accounts and building up a legend.

2. So it was OBL, Saddam, and now Zarqawi
And exactly what harm did they do to us? Why are we still in the ME?

Look at www.icasualties.org for the reality.

9. Until he goes on trial and proof is offered to a judge...
that's just an allegation. Because he definitely didn't kill 3000 people on 9/11, unless he was one of the alleged hijackers.

24. You don't actually believe that UBL wasn't the leader
of the organization that perpetrated 9/11, do you?

21. Ah yes, poor misundertood
Osama. Poor Saddam an al-Zarqawi. Look, if this is true, it's absolutely wrong, but how anyone can ask the question "what did they do to us?" boggles the mind.

3. Sad that it's so hard to believe our leaders over the "enemy"
But our leaders are the ones who keep lying to cover up murder, torture and war crimes, and just about every time one of these accusations reaches us from Iraq, it winds up verified. I guess we can add "Freedom to beat a dying man on a stretcher" to the list of freedoms they hate us for.

5. Call me unfeeling but...
Even though I know on every level it's wrong to beat a dying man but in this case I have a really hard time dredging up any sympathy for that piece of garbage. If you've ever seen the Nick Berg beheading you know what I mean.

6. Well....
I didn't like the guy either. But beating him does not bring back Berg. And would he more valuable as an intelligence source. Also does brutality breed more brutality? Think about this....

7. I do not think I could fault you for your feelings.
It is all too human and so very difficult to attempt a right/wrong judgment.
It is not bad or wrong to wish to see the end of such a dangerous threat to humanity, an end that guarantees that this particular source of horror will never, ever have the opportunity to hurt us in the way he so obviously favored.
The major concern, in my opinion, is the damage we do to our own honor and humanity by yielding to those urges.

In the real world, this particular death penalty is totally justifiable, forgivable, and comports with my own sense of justice, given the number of lives saved by his demise.

But at what price?

from head to toe while beheading Berg. Clearly he had no desire to do so in his later video. And it was a much better quality too. Why not show his face while beheading Berg?
Hmm.

12. Even if it is not true we have left our self wide open to claim
We are now looked at as being people who treat Middle East people very bad so the harm is done and true or not if the people in the Middle East think it, the harm is done.

23. I heard a witness say Al-Zarqawi was abducted by aliens
However, I think I'll wait to see how many others come forward with the same eyewitness testimony.
