1. Never Forget
that is why the comparisons to this illegal regime and the fascist of the past is not only apt but our duty.

8. I use to work for an environmental lobbying group.
One evening I was going door to door getting signatures for an issue we were working on.
I went to one door & a sweet older lady opened the door. She seemed very interested in what we were doing & invited me into her home. I went into her cozy kitchen & she offered me some tea. As she was pouring our tea her sleeve moved up her arm & I saw the numbers tattooed on her arm.
When it hit me what this women must have been through in her life I wanted to cry. When she saw what I was looking at she just smiled & gave me a look that spoke volumes. After leaving her home I could not believe that someone who had seen all she had seen & suffered all that she had suffered could be as kind, sweet & caring as she was. Thinking of her always reminds me of the best & the worst of humanity.

9. That is so true
I have a couple friends who have those numbers on their arms. They are both so sweet, despite what they have been through. Even though I've seen those tattoos hundreds of times, each time I see it I get the knife in the heart feeling. That is as it should be.

We must never forget.

And it can happen here.

11. I think it must be the only way to survive a horror like that.
You have to forgive, otherwise the anger and bitterness will just eat you up. That lady has found the way, thankfully.

14. I remember reading somewhere, I know I'll get it wrong,
a quote from a survivor of a concentration camp. This man said something like it could have been worse for him, he could have been like his captors. I thought that was so wonderful & so true.
Despite the how bad it hurts sometimes to care, to feel others pain, to mourn what has been lost, to fight what sometimes seems like a hopeless fight. I am grateful that I do still care & feel & dream & fight. I pray I will never stop caring, feeling, dreaming & fighting.

12. I could actually see the religious right reading this and
nodding their heads enthusiastically in total agreement. They seem to think that having to tolerate anything but their own narrow, punitive, fucked up view of religion (and life in general) is akin to being persecuted for their beliefs. They would never see themselves at the ones doing the persecuting.

Still, it is a FANTASTIC comic. I love Wiley. I'm glad the right-wing Chicago Tribune bothers to carry it.
