Mexico stomped Iran in the World Cup
Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 01:09 PM by leftyladyfrommo
I don't know if that is bad or good. But the World Cup is pretty exciting stuff.

I saw where some strict Islamists tried to ban the World Cup and it ended up in a riot. They cut off power to the TV's and kept people out of the places they could watch.

1. Yeah, I love watching the World Cup games...
Not that I really understand the game, but watching the faces of the players, coaches, and the fans in the stands is something else.

I'm looking forward to the Angola v. Portugal later this afternoon. I think it'll be interesting just from the POV that Angola used to be a Portugese colony...

3. The FReepers must be going nuts: Immigrants vs. Islamofascists?
Me, I think it's a sporting event, and the more often divergent groups and nations meet, the better off we are (although soccer sucks, of course).

4. It was the foulest game so far. Forty-six fouls, 25 by Mexico.
Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 01:34 PM by TahitiNut
Compare that to only 19 fouls in the scoreless tie between Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden - an excellent game.

I was not impressed. Mexico's 25 fouls is the most so far in World Cup 2006.

12. "reacting"? How so?
I enjoy watching World Cup soccer - not for any jingoistic 'team loyalty' but for an appreciation of the sport, especially when it's well-played. For me, "well-played" doesn't mean fouling. Part of my appreciation for the sport is the mandate that they "play the ball" and not "play the man." I enjoy competition that doesn't include hindering or disabling other competitors. My college sport was swimming. I enjoy golf, tennis, and other "performance" sports.

Did I inadvertently push a hot button when I related my lesser appreciation of this particular match to the high number of fouls? Is the fact that Mexico was called for more fouls than any team so far cause some anxiety? In my opinion, it was a poor performance - and the fouling is indicative of why I'd think so. (It's also probably part of why I enjoy women's soccer more than men's soccer.)

It's a shame that anyone would choose to inject some innuendo of bias where none exists.

13. I think you are way overanalzying my post
But I know that's you, so I won't take it personal.

My post was just a sarcastic take on all the previous immigration threads where everyone is screaming that the Mexicans are ILLEGALLY entering this country. It wasn't directed at you nor at anybody in particular.

It was just meant as a joke so there were no "hot buttons" pushed. I was laughing as I posted it.

I am naturally sarcastic yet I seldomly use the :sarcasm: smilie because I believe that is the equivilant of poking someone in the ribs after you tell them a joke.

16. Well, rest easy. Angola has now taken first place in fouls with 29.
Another example of a not-so-well-played game, imho, with a total of 49 fouls and 5 yellow cards.

Don't they have any respect for the Germans? If they love Mexico so much, they should just watch the game from there.

8. Por 1 Ang 0 after 8 minutes.
Portugal almost scored in the first minute, just missing the goal. They scored at 4:00 on a beautiful feed, catch up and cross to an open man. A beautiful goal.

21. First off, Ive never watched soccer until yesterday
then I watched it, became engrossed in the talent these guys had with their feet and a ball. The longer I watched the more i realized the plays being set up and the strategies being used. I watched that English guy who could kick a ball in the air fifty yards and make it land on a guys foot running full blast towards the goal, incredible .

I look forward to watching more of the Cup and actually enjoying it this year, dont know what happened but the appeal of the game to me, shot up tenfold . It really is a great game.

23. It's truly an amazing sport.
These people don't have to be sideshow pituitary anomalies, bred on HGH and steroids. Agility and endurance are in the reach of most who'll work for it. It's a sport that requires a minimum of equipment - affluence isn't necessary. Kids play barefoot on dirt in poor regions of the world. The greatest soccer player of the modern era was born dirt poor. It's truly a 'democratic' sport.
