A note on 'persecution' of the 'christian' Right
Has anyone actually noticed that all of the 'christian' Right leaders who claim that Conservative Christians are being 'persecuted' do so in Mega Churches that are worth millions of dollars, are surrounded by 10's of 1000's of followers, and make this announcement of persecution on national TV?

It would be funny if it weren't for the fact that at least 1 (way too many) person believes this.

1. tens of thousands of them eat it up and believe it.
of course, a true minority, an agnostic like me, would be spat upon and discriminated against if they knew how I felt about religions. In fact, I do see that here in my home town.

3. You haven't been attending the agnostic/atheist Sunday morning
church blockades organized by the super powerful agnostic/atheist movement. I've been participating in them for a few years now, they're lots of fun. I also go door to door and ask people if they believe in God, when they say yes, I call them idiots and walk away. I have to say my missionary work hasn't resulted in that many converts. :sarcasm:

13. I've seen it here on DU
It shocked me that I was flamed for not believing in God. The thread went wild.

14. The meme is so pervasive that even individuals who are
ordinarily open-minded react negatively to those of us (myself included)who don't believe in a higher power. There was a study done recently in which atheists and agnostics were found to be the least trusted group. It frightens me quite frankly, I sort of feel like the canary in the coal mine.

:scared:

19. Thanks for the website.
I don't think I can feel the same regard ever for those who attacked me for atheists beliefs.

2. I agree
It would be funny, but instead it is depressing as heck that so many fall for it.

4. Hardcore Christianists have had a persecution complex for years
They expect it. Go read those pop-rapture titles from the 1970s like Hal Lindsey's The Late, Great Planet Earth, or check out old Jack Chick cartoon tracts. They figure that the Antichrist will start feeding them to lions, and they're on the lookout for anyone who shows twinges of hating "Christians." Of course, their own aggressive behavior may be partly responsible for how others view them unfavorably, especially now that they have enough political power to push their religion-based agenda, but don't expect them to see that.

17. Did you remind her that hanging a flag smacks of idolatry??
God/Jeebus probably doesn't like the current RW obsession with flag-waving.

Or at least professing to.

Yah - poor, poor, downtrodden god-worshippers. Breaks my heart.

20. Yes , a belief in God shows them superior
to us pagans who reject God. We just think people need to stick together and take care of the needy among us.

We must truly be evil, without conscience, and an aberration to God. That's how we're seen by Christian believers. Even DU'ers.

are you referring to the poster who's been a democrat since the late '90's and is disturbed that "some dems" want to eradicate religion from society?

16. It's not for me to say
He very well could be who and what he says he is. I read on another thread that he has worked with Warner. That could explain alot;)

For me, merging politics with religion has done, and continues to, a lot of harm to political discourse, the rule of law, and respect & understanding of the Constitution. For this to now infect the Democratic Party is not a good omen (please excuse the pun).

24. they will say & do anything to further their agenda
And usually it involves pulling some stops to gain a moral advantage, so the true believers don't question the outlandish things their corrupt leaders say & do.

25. The Big Lie
Say something loud enough, long enough and often enough and people begin to believe it--even if it's complete BS. That's why so many believers are going around actually believing that they've been victims of "anti-Christian persecution", while if you press them for genuine instances in which they've experienced it they cannot name any. It's always vague catch phrases they've heard by word of mouth like "I can't even say Merry Christmas to people any more" (but if you ask when they were ever forbidden to do so they are not able to give even one instance), or "My kid isn't allowed to pray in school", (He's only prohibited from praying aloud, not silently--but the same goes for the Muslim kids, the Jewish kids, the Pagan kids, etc. Therefore it's not "anti-Christian persecution").

26. "Blessed are you ....
... when people persecute you and revile you for My name's sake."

They *like* being persecuted. Makes them feel validated or closer to the Lord or something. Sorry, I'm feeling too lazy to look up chapter and verse for the quote.
