1. For me, it started in 1980
when the GOP made a deal with Iran not to release the hostages until after the election in order to discredit Carter. It was so obvious, and it was the beginning of the end, IMO.

4. I was only 14 at the time, and it was obvious to me then
just being a jr. high school rug rat.

The extreme right wing in this country are gutsy, albeit apocalyptically reckless. When they freak out and pull these coups, as they've done so often in the past, they're always blatant and telegraphed. Each one brings our republic down a notch. The so-called War on Drugs (Now 21 years old), officially started under Ray-Gun in 1985 has been used simply as a means of curtailing the First and Fourth Amendments. And the 'masses' in true sheeple fashion, have been quick to release their rights in the name of fighting a 'war' against one abstraction or another. It's a long, bloody descent into a theocratic police state. Unfortunately, the 'masses' always realize this after it's too late, despite the fact that there is ample historical precedent.

It's a sad commentary on our species, IMO. :-(

5. you know what was even more in your face republican stealing of
a presidential election? Nixon's 1972 victory over McGovern. 49-1 MY ASS! WHO'S WITH ME?!!!

:eyes:

Reagan didn't steal the election, inflation and high gas prices and the disastrous attempt to rescue the hostages did Jimmy Carter in.

But please, explain how it was as "in your face" as the 2000 election.

3. yes...that is when poppy dirty, lusty, covert hands, which were also the
power behind the 2000 coup started the whole thing...from an evil father (poppy) to an evil son (junior) and one waiting on the isles (jeb).

7. Yeah but Carter's campaign failed for many reasons
The GOP could have put up a rag doll and still would have won in 1980. The economy under Carter was horrific. Everything from the gas crisis to double digit mortgage rates. Whether he had anything to do with it or not, when the economy is that bad, the president will always get 100% of the blame.

8. I was a teen in '80 but when Carter turned the presidency ove to Reagan
I remember being at home sick with strepthroat watching the inauguration and crying. I felt so sad that Carter, an obviously humble and honest man, was leaving and wide-eyed, crazed looking Nancy Reagan with her astrologers and rosy-cheeked Grecian formulaed plastic husband were taking over. The contrast between the Reagans and the Carters was startling.

6. NO...
it wasn't the US.

I think this is something where the progeny won't be claiming bragging rights. Ironically, I think they will be part of the flotsam of history.
