"increasing the minimum wage, cutting costs of prescription drugs, reducing interest rates on student loans, rolling back subsidies for oil companies, and pay-as-you-go budgeting"

Democrats to roll out action plan

WASHINGTON -- Democrats are set to introduce a domestic agenda for the 2006 campaign this week, confident that their opportunity to pick up seats is the best in a generation, yet divided over how much an agenda will matter.

The Democratic program will consist of bread-and-butter priorities: increasing the minimum wage, cutting costs of prescription drugs, reducing interest rates on student loans, rolling back subsidies for oil companies, and pay-as-you-go budgeting, according to party officials.

Party strategists hope the timing will contrast favorably with the Republicans' recent push on social legislation such as constitutional bans on gay marriage and flag burning.

With President Bush and Republicans in political free fall, others in the party believe what Democrats do and say is of far less consequence than the price of gasoline and the daily casualties from Iraq.

"what Democrats do and say is of far less consequence" - BULL!!!

5. My vote:

NO CONFIDENCE

Milk toast. Bullshit. Doesn't skim the surface of what needs to be said and done. This is *exactly* what Russ Feingold is warning the entrenched Dem establishment AGAINST.

Feingold: Democrats will not win "if we play it safe

LA CROSSE -- Wisconsin Democrats will need to do more than tap popular discontent with President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress if they want to win this fall's elections, U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold told a cheering audience at the state Democratic Party Convention on Friday.

Democrats will not win "if we play it safe," said Feingold, who has staked out some of the boldest positions in the U.S. Senate by voting against the war in Iraq, calling for a deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops there and proposing that lawmakers censure the president for his domestic spying programs.

"We will not win by default. We will not win by running down the clock," he said. "People will perceive if we are not standing on principles. They will perceive if we are fearful and weak, if we do not stand up for what we believe in. That is the only way we truly win."

He added that if Democrats fail to do that, "we don't deserve to win."

16. Repeat - this is their domestic agenda
Domestic issues are also important. Health care, education, etc. are all critically important issues, too.

8. Believe it or not, I think it's too early.
The Republicans are already rocked from every direction, their own long termers fed up with them, immigration is going nowhere enraging their once loyal minions.

Let's just ride this wave of discontent for the present because everything from the poll numbers to the calls on C-Span show it. And the beauty of this is most people are not even paying attention yet.

It takes two or three weeks for average Bob and Bertha American to hear about anything and these polls have been in the cellar for months.

Let's roll out our formal agenda right after Labor Day, just like the Republicans did with the Contract. People will really first be starting to pay attention. It will get maximum impact and timely press coverage just when we want it.

Plus the Republicans heads will be exploding if we don't do it until then because they won't have anything official to try to attack. Little good it will do them anyway, but we don't even have to tip our hand.

Initially I thought I would be a good idea to do something early, but I've changed my mind. The Republicans are imploding like a controlled demolition all by themselves. Now let me tell you the best part. Look at all the scandals that are percolating in one form or another that could set off more charges any given day. They're too numerous to mention.

Let us just watch the implosion for now and then come in after the Republicans are just a big pile of rubble with our plans for the new beatiful building in which we will shelter, advance and enhance the middle class with sensible and productive government.

17. There's nothing controversial in this domestic agenda
and these are all issues the GOP is weak on. Better to keep voters attention focused on these issues to weaken the GOP.

The GOP has nothing good to offer when it comes to these issues. Better to bring that home to the voters all summer long.

9. TThe "This is what we could all agree on plan"
It's not bad, really, but it is rather pitiful that they can't bring themselves to mention the "I" words.

Iraq is the number one issue in this country and it is the one which is driving so many of the others.

The other "I" is immigration where it looks like they're setting themselves up to be on the opposite side of the issue from most American workers. Surely it's possible to oppose a formalized "guest worker" program, toughen border security and most important call for real sanctions against employers who hire undocumented workers without demonizing the workers themselves?

If the Democrats refuse to deal with these two issues, they will lose.

10. Running on a negative campaign won't work. This is a positive agenda!
If the Dems run on a primary agenda of Impeachment, it will turn off many people.

Focus on what most people deal with daily (financial and healthcare)

12. I didn't say anything about the third "I" word, Impeachment
I think you're right that running on impeachment may not be the best thing to do politically.

Running away from Iraq and Immigration, however are also sure losers.

13. Ah, "I" word, to me, means Impeachment
There does seem to be a fair amount of "I" words one can attach to this admin.

But, yeah, focusing on what affects most Americans is what the Dems need to do. Hit the GOP hard where they've ignored the most (Domestic Policy).

11. If they fail
to deal with those two major issues like you say and I agree, What is the difference between the two party's? Those are very important issues with me as a voter. I would never vote for a repuke but what the hell do we have to vote for if the Dem's are all to chicken shit to stand up and say we are for the American worker and border control and lets get the hell out of Iraq.
