1. My top issue will always be fixing the election system, and then fixing
everything else.

16. Agreed.
I voted for "Out of Iraq" given the above choices. But Election Reform was my first thought.

17. I don't understand why "fair elections" isn't offered....
Iraq would be my personal first, but I know a lotta people around here would choose something like "fair elections"....

lobbyists for defense contractors -> Iraq... and so forth...

It's your poll though - rock on!

23. It Appeared Just After I Voted
Of the choices that were then in the poll, I voted for "Break Up the Media Empires".

Stopping the Diebold Republican Electing Machinez is top of the list though.

28. It's tempting to say that it's a one-step societal fix
In reality, it's harder than that.

It is the first step, however. Until we restore representative democracy, everything else is a pipe dream.

2. a true opposition party for the US that oppposes the repubs in
every way shape and form and never apologizes for being right or for telling the truth AND calls the republicans and their policies for what they are: dishonest, hateful, violent, evil, and anti-american.

ooops, that wasn't on the poll.

5. Although I agree that the voting system must be fixed
before many other repairs stand a chance, I believe that getting out of Iraq is our first priority. We need to withdraw foreign lands and come home to solve our problems. This is not to say that we ignore our responsibilities to others in the world, but let us stop making more messes and clean up our own.

6. Other: peaceful resolution with Iran.
This is most pressing now, of very great weight -- and a failure here will be approaching impossible to recover from.

No wars, no persecution, no creeping prison/police state.

10. Mine wasn't up there, picked a close second though
Although the rest is a problem if our media worked and we had something like investigative journalism it never could have got this bad in the first place. If we can't talk about what did go wrong with the rest it's that much harder to fix, so fix the media and the rest follows easier.

Personally though I'd think the fact that we're the single most imprisoned nation on the planet with racial stats that look like these might be an issue too. It's top on my list of things to fix and wasn't in the poll. http://www.prisonsucks.com/

11. "Honor labor."
Edited on Mon Jun-12-06 07:33 PM by TahitiNut
That's simple and succinct. It means stop taxing income from one's own labor higher than income from the labor of others. It means affordable health care. It means that our national priority should be labor, not profit. It means a livable wage. It means a 36-hour work week and double time for overtime. It means affordable child care. It means outlawing employer control over pensions and health care. It means outlawing employer invasions of individual privacy! It means outlawing wrongful terminations - requiring termination for cause only.

Honor labor!

It should and must be regarded as a privilege to benefit from making investments in labor and enterprise - that it's the workers who constitute a business, not some indolent asshole whose daddy died and left him money.

14. 2 issues not listed
1. Protection and preservation of our Constitution. Without our rights, we have NOTHING. This includes our right to fair voting.
2. Protection and preservation of Earth (environment).
After those, I'd have to say jobs/economy - the means to pursue happiness.

21. until the media is fixed- nothing else really matters,
because nothing else can really be accomplished until then.

and the u.s. out of iraq is a nice pipe-dream...but face it- we broke, we bought it. unless/until we can make a deal with the rest of the world and/or the u.n. to safeguard the peace- we are duty-bound to stay...if we up and left now, iraq would be carved up between iran, the kurds, and the saudi's...which wouldn't make turkey too happy, and isreal's already jumpy...if we really wanted to start ww3- pulling out of iraq might be just the ticket.

the environment could be the main issue- but at this point anything we do will just push back the death of civilization a short while...and until the media is once again free, honest, & responsible, global warming won't be real anyway.

and as long as the talking heads tell them the elections are on the up and up- people will believe it.

29. Corporate influence out of government.
If this can still be achieved through election reform, then so be it. Whatever brings our government back to representing we, the people rather than the highest bidder.
