Conyers:The Right to Vote is Supposed to Mean Something in the US
The Right to Vote is Supposed to Mean Something in the United States

The title is a quote from Bob Herbert's op-ed in the New York Times today. The Times' opinion page is subscription only so I will excerpt a few pieces of it here.

Herbert's column follows up on the Rolling Stone piece written by Robert Kennedy Jr. casting doubt on the legality of the voting in Ohio that led to a Bush victory in 2004. Herbert notes, "the range of problems and dirty tricks that come to light is shocking."

It has taken awhile, but it feels as if we are finally beginning to get some traction on this issue. I don't know why the media has been loathe to cover this story because there are scores of documented accounts of irregularities that we uncovered in our January 2005 Columbus hearings. As Herbert puts it,"The lesson out of Ohio (and Florida before it) is that the integrity of the election process needs to be more fiercely defended in the face of outrageous Republican assaults."

We need to build upon this nascent coverage and get America to do some soul-searching regarding its commitment to democracy. Herbert hits the nail on the head with this conclusion,"The idea of going to war overseas in the name of the democratic process while making a mockery of that process here at home is just too ludicrous."

2. Its not lost, its just sleeping
One by one, people are waking up, mainly because there are a quite a few more of us sounding the alarm. Almost like a bunch of Paul Reveeres, eh?

5. a very tough
and dedicated bunch of Paul Reveres has been behind the exposure of the facts about the dysfunctional election system. When the full story is told, there will be many who carried the torch.

Thanks to DU and so many others speaking out, out here, like Conyers and the likes I find myself speaking-up more and more to any and all that will listen. And you know what - they're awakening alright. Ew-boy. Look out GOP when you're Republican voters get ticked-off. Shew.

Good post. Thanks, Congressman Conyers.

6. Voter discrimination is no longer a matter of gender, race, religion, etc.
It has become purely political and universal in the United States. I wonder what Susan Anthony or Martin Luther King, or others who struggled for voter rights would say if they could see 21st Century America?

We are a disgrace.

It's encouraging to me that he believes that's the case. Maybe it will stick.
