Brad on Ed Schultz Show re: Tainted Results of Busby/Bilbray Race…
Big Eddie Begins to Get It…

I was tipped off that callers to The Ed Schultz Show were misreporting my coverage of the tainted results as reported by the San Diego County Registrar from the Busby/Bilbray U.S. House special election in California's 50th congressional district last week. (All BRAD BLOG stories on the topic here.)

I was able to get through to Schultz' producer (thanks, Homey!) who was able to get me on the air with Big Ed to straighten out the record after a few minutes explaining it to Ed off air. After understanding what the hell is going on here, Schultz — who has previously declined to deal with E-Voting issues in large part — seemed to be ticked off when he learned that security for the Diebold voting machines used in the election was irreparably breached by sending the machines home with poll workers, in violation of California guidelines, prior to the very close and very important election...

2. oh please... do you really think something could be done
about this when they control EVERYTHING?

I mean can you really see people taking to the streets to change this? That won't happen unfortunately.

3. As sad as it is to admit...I am afraid that you are right.
Time and time again we see evidence of election fraud and time and time again nothing is done about it.

Results don't change, opinions don't change, nothing changes.

The dems become the "sore losers" and the rethugs go on their merry way.

4. California? Laws? We don't concern ourselves with no steenkin' laws...

The certification of the Diebold machines themselves, by CA SoS Bruce McPherson, was in *direct* contradiction of state law. No ifs ands or buts about it. Hence a group of voters has filed a lawsuit to halt the use and purchase of those machines prior to November.

Sending the machines home with poll workers however, is in contradiction to the requirements for McPherson's "conditional certification" of the Diebold machines. Which means, if the requirements were violated, the conditions for certification were not meant, and thus, the election was run on uncertified machines. Which is in direct contradiction of California law, of course.

So that's a long way to say "yes". But nothing is illegal until found so by a court of law. Certainly McPherson seems uninterested in actually enforcing his own conditions for security risk mitigation steps.

The people of San Diego need to start making noise NOW about this.

However, there is more coming both tonight and tomorrow on all of this...Keep making noise out there!

(But only if you give a damn about legitimate elections with actually verifiable results.)

7. How does a law get challenged?
If McPherson is in breach of said laws, who gets to press charges? Can't an ordinary citizen?

Or, if it's up to the other political party, why no action yet?

Or is this Ahnuld's responibility?

12. Brad - Do you know there is video footage of people taking machines home
in "Votergate" - the movie? I think it would be well worth posting this link or a segment of the film that shows this on your site. The video includes Bev Harris interviewing a woman who volunteered to be a pollworker and who was sent home with 10+ voting machines. They loaded them into her car and she drove them home. Her parents helped her move them into their living room and they took pictures & video of the machines. She also tested one of the 'seals' on the machine -- the seals that ensure that the poll workers haven't tampered with the machines are the kind you can pull off and stick back on again. :(

15. Heard you on Eddie's show, Brad--great stuff
One question--how come Ed was fixating on "IF this actually happened" and kept wondering if there was "proof", when you said repeatedly that there was a ton of official proof? Do you think Ed ever "got it" or is he still confused about what happened in California? Has he been living in the sunny State of Denial about election fraud for too long?

5. Very happy to hear Ed and Brad talking about the uncertainties.
Good interview. Really liked Ed's questions, Brad's responses, and Brad saying when he just didn't know, but thought that we all ought to know.

6. And Ed is trying to get an on-air interview with RFK, Jr. It seems
that he's being flooded with E-mails about the article, and he's taking an interest now.

8. The one complaint I have with Bradblog is he focuses on Busby - all of San
Diego is affected by this violation. There are 5 House districts in San Diego and they're all affected by this: Susan Davis (53rd) is in a pretty solid district: why not call on her to make waves about the violation of state law? or Barbara Boxer?

He's quite critical of Busby, which given her email reply is deserved to an extent, but unless he's pulling for Bilbray to win the November election, too, he needs to tone down his public criticism. Busby is in an overwhelmingly Republican district, and the last thing she wants to do is motivate *MORE* of the Republican base to turn out in November. Which could happen, if a fuss is made over this by *her*, and then nothing comes of it.

Boxer or Davis, or the DNC, are the better places where calls for investigation should come from.

10. It was a great interview Brad
I'm glad your doing all you can turning over as many stones as possible on this issue.

Here in MI, even though we have optical scan machines, some very dubious things can still go on.

In fact, when I voted in 2004 in Rochester Hills, MI, the machine that read our cards broke down. After several attempts by poll workers to fix the machine, the poll workers asked us to put our ballots into the lock bock under the reader and the ballots would be scanned later. I called the 1800 number provided to me about the incident but the fact remains, are our votes being sent into a black hole?
We have to assume that the poll workers are sincere and honest volunteers but a serious break down is occuring regarding the simple act of counting our votes. You know as well as I do that there is a huge segment of the population that doesn't want "those" people to vote. Who are they? The poor, blacks, minority religions, etc.
But bottom line, the will of the voter is being subverted, and this is not a government run by the consent of the people.

11. Ed needs to be brought up to speed on blogs
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 09:47 AM by DemoVet
He consistently demonstrates a lack of understanding of what blogging is and does. For example, he seems to think that every progressive blog in the nation was obsessing about some 68,000 vote discrepency in the Busby election when the only place I was hearing about it was on his show. Atrios, Kos, C&L, TPM, none of them even mentioned it. Another thing he harps on is that "bloggers all think that they're going to have an influence on the next election" or something like that, and goes on about how they really don't have that much influence at all (Uh, Stephanie Herseth, Ed?). It was good to hear Brad straighten him out on the issues involved in the CA-50 election and Ed actually listened and let Brad talk, but he needs a primer about what the blogs are doing, all the work re: Plame, Bolton, Glen Greenwald and Jane Hamsher's stuff, TPM Muckraker, and others. He also needs to get up to speed on Joementum, maybe some of our Nutmeg State members can give him some calls.
