So what have we learned today?
1. No one in this administration will ever be held to account for their criminal activities - No, not even Libby.

2. The Judicial branch of government has officially been emasculated - Congress is allowed to function because they still have to appropriate the funds that the Bush crime family steals.

3. The criminal enterprise in government (not just the White House, its important to remember) is now on the threshold of a new era, more emboldened than they have been previously.

4. DUers should refrain from jumping down the throats of their fellow DUers simply because they hold an unpopular position that has no bearing on their progressive cred. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=1253824#1254123

5. Karl Rove is now free to run the 2006 elections. I do not need to state the inevitable. Clearly, the values voters are going to turn out in droves and defy all the polls and strengthen the Republican majorities in congress.

6. I could go on but I am very saddened by today's events, even though I knew this would come to pass.

1. About a year ago, I stated that if Karl Rove got indicted, I'd

eat shit in Macy's window at Christmas time.

I'm now making that same commitment concerning Scooter Libbey getting convicted.

And as far as Bush and Cheney ever having to face justice, we'll all be long dead before seeing that take place.

Call me a cynic if you'd like. I prefer the term realist. And to take it a step further, a realist who has soured on any hope of ever seeing any justice on this particular planet.

(edited for clarity)

he is already indicted and his last name does not have an "e" in it.

Does this mean that you will eat shit at Macy's this X-mas regarding Libby's 5 count indictment?

5. The #1 crisis facing America, without a doubt
If we are to have any hope we have to re-double our efforts, put some pants on, and work out butts off to counter the institutional ministry of disinformation.

3. I have learned we live in a fascist state.
Our voices mean nothing; we cannot change the wheels that are in motion. As long as we continue to operate under the assumption that the United States is still a democracy, we won't get anywhere.

17. Democracy on a a scale
from total sham under a de facto dictatorship to total citizen participation(we never had it). I think a fair assessment is that democracy falls all across the scale in America. It is not that it doesn't exist, it is that it is currently a tragic mess. Once we admitted we had a mess. Those were the "good old days" we relished- stupidly. "It's an imperfect system but it's the best we have." You could say that as firmly about your grave. It was downhill and degradation from there- inevitably. The press lauded this looney tunes popular wisdom until the press too was dumber than a gaggle of uneducated, obsequious serfs.

In this shattered landscape this is what we have. An active, unchecked tyranny, a real dictator therefore, a ruined and complicit press and media, loss of rights, a raped and dysfunctional government serving the whims of a small privileged minority from among whom many of them come or wish to graduate to. Well, the list of horrors matches any list you could make for any totalitarian regime. We also STILL have freedom of discourse and dissemination of opinion, dissent, opposition and brave investigative and truthful voices, good laws, good education and information infrastructure(terribly abused and occupied in many places), a good degree of dedicated voting and fair counting, a necessary bowing to the common good and common will which resists tyranny and lies but is always frustrated and pushed off.

What we see is a democracy in torment, disarray, competition, renaissance, rebirth, just plain birth, seeking new forms, losing old ones(old party structures), under threat from apathy and tyranny and exploitation(so what is new?), a collision of myths, delusions lies and real power. In it all the common thread among the people has stood very firm indeed compared to the cynicism I once felt toward the majority under Reagan. The people are stronger than anything, including their presumed democracy. A dictator instinctively knows the entire society must collapse and be degraded, divided and animalistic, tearing each other's throats out for a buck and a senseless hate. A real democrat knows the people cannot safely remain in the center. It is not called "no man's land" for nothing. This shattered landscape is a field of battle, vast and unknown to foot soldier and general alike. Perhaps the issue is in in doubt, will resolve in an uneasy truce or a total victory perhaps someone has already won, but democracy in us is still very very much alive and fighting for everyone's sake by its very nature. That is why it is forever strong and why guns must be forever employed to momentarily stop it. And why,in the exhaustive nightmare of that struggle, the democratic victors usually stop short and lose sight of their goal. And relax and become prey instead of joint masters of their civil destiny.

4. No-one held accountable.
This is very sad...but very true. Nothing can stop or even briefly delay them . Seems to me that small face-saving attempts are made occasionally, but it's all show with no substance. They are in control....period. Perhaps I'm overly cynical(!) and Rove really is totally innocent of any wrong-doing...but I sort of doubt it. So much for Fitzgerald and all that malarkey.

11. What have I learned? That white washes are still in vogue...
that scumbag rove is cut loose just in time to screw with the november elections, that it appears that regardless that scumbag rove was called before the grand jury to testify 5 TIMES, they don't have enough on him to indict him, that regardless of how much bullshit you sling in this country, no matter how many laws you break, money and lots of it will always get you off.

As long as you are a "friend" of the colossal failure*, you will always have a secret pardon.

Unless we as a nation stand up to these crooked mother fuckers, now or in November, America's fate is sealed. It will be viewed as a country that once was. The great experiment will be determined to be a failure.

13. This could work FOR us
remember Bill Clinton became more popular after he got caught with Monica, Roves getting off scot-free only makes *et al look more dirty, and all the rest Z getting killed, *'s Iraq visit, and Faux noozes Saddam papers-well timed political games something Americans (I believe) are very tired of.In truth this is all puffery.

16. You learned #1 just today?
We're America. Our high officials don't do held to account. Before, during, or after this administration. They make millions before holding office(which is the only way they can even get in the door), hold office while making the rules easier to make millions, then give their office to the next guy making millions, then return to making millions using those new rules they wrote.

Criminal activities...cute.

18. Great post. I have learned that
anyone and everyone in this country who does not directly benefit the * administration is
"fair game."

They are the predators, and we and the country we used to believe in are the prey. It sickens me to think how cynical and jaded I have become at any notion our country can or will ever be restored.

19. Pardons by the score!
Hardly dare to dole them all out in too short a period of time!
When and if the time does come, the chiefs will collect a few million for the favors and pay out to the wrongly appointed justices of the supreme court to clear the chiefs and any other stragglers before they, themselves are removed.
Most of our laws have been changed to fit this despot regime and the continuation will make this once proud nation, just a dark spot on the world map. An easy take-over by even China, who controls the power of finance today!

23. Exactly
And I get more angry with someone in a position to DO something. Fitzgerald. So my husband says, he's just a lawyer. Indeed. Of course it's not his job to save America, nor can he. BUT even if it didn't change a damn thing-and I'm not sure it would anyway-it's not going to stop the war in Iraq-Bush was already "elected"- still the idea of justice. Rove being indicted would be the smallest piece of justice. It would give me a hint of faith back in America. At the moment, I have none.
