Alligators come to town thanks to Katrina
In Slidell, Louisiana, Northeast of New Orleans Alligators have been a greater problem since the Hurricane. Almost daily sightings of the Gators from 5 to 12 feet long are reported. They hang out in ditches along the sides of the road in town. The city has a full time trapper who traps them and takes them to their natural home, a swamp not far from town. They are relatively harmless to adults but can be a problem to pets and small children. Come on down and take a Swamp Tour.

1. Is that swamp Bayou Liberty?

Mr. CB spent many happy hours paddling about the bayous of Slidell in his pirogue (sp? the canoe carved from a tree). He told me that he used to see many gators when he was exploring the bayous back in the 1960s.

5. Most of the Alligators
reside in Honey Island Swamp east and north of Slidell which goes into Mississippi. Bayou Liberty is a neat hunk of real estate but it floods incredibly with just a little rain.

Had lots of great tomato dishes last Saturday in the quarter: Fried Green Tomatoes smothered with Shrimp and Remoulade Sauce. I pigged out so much on tomato dishes that I had to pass on the Fried Chicken. We might do that this coming weekend. The misses had a great Bloody Mary made with Creole Tomatoes of course.

6. Oh my! That food sounds wonderful!
I love Bloody Marys. :) The one you describe msut have been really good. :)

Are ya'll getting any rain? It's still pretty dry up here. We had widely scattered showers yesterday. This morning, I was thinking of everyone down on the Gulf Coast when I was watching the Weather Channel reports about the first tropical storm of the season.

9. Ungodly hot and dry
We need rain bad. The heat is just draining any get up and go out of me. I keep the tidal wave petunias watered every day, other than that I've been worthless outside; but the petunias look great. I give them a good soaking every morning.

2. Gators were there before man and they will be there when man is gone
Who is intruding on who?

I realize they are a menace to children and pets. We just keep squeezing the wild life into smaller and smaller habitats.

3. The gators must have been pushed out of the bayou by the storm.
I don't recall gators being a problem in Slidell (in the sense of hanging out in roadside ditches and yards) pre-Katrina. I'm sure much of their bayou habitat was gretly disturbed and they are simply looking for new homes.
